The short answer: for a marketing team of 8 whose week is requests, owners and due dates, ClickUp's Core plan costs 8 x $9 = $72 a month billed yearly and includes 1,000 automations a month and a pooled AI allowance (ClickUp pricing). For the same 8 people whose work is mostly written, briefs, a wiki and a content calendar kept as a database, Notion Plus costs 8 x $10 = $80 a month billed yearly, and its background agents start on Business at 8 x $20 = $160 (Notion pricing). Both read on 26 October 2026. ClickUp is a task tracker that also holds documents; Notion is a document tool that also tracks tasks.

Disclosure: I may earn a commission through some links on this site. It does not change what this page says.

What decides it:

  1. What an always-on agent costs. Notion's Custom Agents need Business, so the team of 8 pays 8 x ($20 - $10) = $80 a month more than Plus, before any Notion credits at $10 per 1,000 (Notion pricing). ClickUp Core pools 1,000 AI credits per user a month, 8,000 for the team, and ClickUp estimates 100 to 300 credits per Super Agent run, so the pool covers 26 full runs a month at the top estimate (8,000 / 300 = 26.7) and 80 at the bottom (8,000 / 100 = 80) (credits article).
  2. What already lives in Notion. ClickUp imports Notion on every plan: databases arrive as Lists in one Folder, properties as Text Custom Fields, pages as one Doc with subpages, while comments, descriptions and attachments inside inline databases stay behind (import article). Count how much of your wiki sits in those three before planning a move.
  3. The free plans with more than one person in them. ClickUp's free plan takes unlimited members but stops at 60 Custom Field values in total, a count that never resets, and 100 automation actions a month (Custom Fields uses, automation limits). Notion's free plan is unlimited for one person, limits blocks once a second member joins, and automates with buttons only (Notion pricing).
  4. The count to read after a month. Note how many requests reached the team by chat or email instead of the tool, for the month before and the month after. Whichever tool brings that number down is earning its seats.

Where they part

The unit of work each one assumes

ClickUp's paid plan is built around tracked work: unlimited forms, Gantt charts, ClickUp Chat, goals and guest permissions on Core, per its pricing page. Notion's is built around pages: custom forms and sites, charts, file uploads and collaborative blocks on Plus, with Notion Calendar on every plan (pricing). Teams that ship tickets settle into the first. Teams that ship documents settle into the second.

How the AI bill is shaped

ClickUp pours every user's credits into one workspace pool and sells more at $10 per 10,000 (pricing). Notion gives each member a personal allowance that cannot be combined or moved between members, and pauses that person's AI work when it runs out unless an admin lets them continue on paid Notion credits (eligible features). New Business workspaces moved to that system on 19 October 2026 and existing ones move on 2 November. A ClickUp credit and a Notion credit are not the same unit, so compare the runs each buys, never the credit counts.

What 8 seats cost

Per seat a month in USD, billed yearly, checked on 26 October 2026 on the ClickUp and Notion pricing pages.

PlanPer seat8 seats a month8 seats a year
ClickUp Core$9$72$864
ClickUp Business$17$136$1,632
Notion Plus$10$80$960
Notion Business$20$160$1,920

Notion's monthly rates are $12 for Plus and $24 for Business. ClickUp's page shows one of two price lists on any visit, and its pricing article says new workspaces start on the Core and Business plans used above; ClickUp vs Asana covers the older list.

One agent job: the Friday campaign update

Notion documents this job end to end. In the Agents section, describe a Custom Agent that drafts a weekly update from your campaign database, saves each draft as a page in a Weekly Updates database, and posts a short Slack summary only when a draft's status changes to Published (Notion's guide). The human check is built into the status: the campaign lead reads the draft against the database, fixes what the agent misread, and only then flips it to Published. ClickUp's Super Agents draft creative briefs from a task or Chat thread, log every action and ask a person before critical decisions (Super Agents).

Notion charges a shared agent to the person who built it: by default a Custom Agent spends its owner's 500 monthly Select credits even when colleagues trigger it, and when those are gone it pauses until an admin funds it from paid Notion credits (Custom Agent credits). That default makes the most useful agent in the workspace the first reason to buy credits. If an agent serves the whole team, move it to a workspace budget with a cap on the day you publish it.

Free first: move one teamspace across

Both tools cost nothing to test. Export one Notion teamspace as HTML from Settings, import it into a free ClickUp workspace, and run one week of real requests in each, with the Notion copy left untouched (import article). Count the fields that arrived as plain text and the comments that stayed behind, then the requests each version caught.

Sometimes the test shows the team needs one agreed place for requests, briefs and decisions more than it needs a new tool. That is a stack question rather than a ClickUp or Notion one, and a fixed one-week review like the Startup Fixer, which I sell, settles it before either subscription grows.

Choose ClickUp if your job is

  • Running requests, campaigns and sprints as tasks with owners, due dates and intake forms.
  • Automating handovers: 1,000 automation actions a month on Core at $9 a user billed yearly (pricing).
  • Paying for AI as one team pool rather than person by person.

Choose Notion if your job is

  • Keeping the brand book, briefs, meeting notes and content calendar as one set of linked pages.
  • Working with freelancers and agencies, who join paid plans as free guests on the pages they are invited to.
  • Running background agents on schedules, database changes or Slack messages, on Business at $20 a member billed yearly (pricing).

Background: the ClickUp entry, and how to use ClickUp for a request form built on the free plan. Notion's calendar side is in Motion vs Notion.

FAQ

Will my Notion databases survive a move to ClickUp?

The rows will, as tasks, and every property becomes a Text Custom Field in the matching List. Percent signs in number fields are dropped, and currency-formatted numbers become Money fields (import article). On the free plan, each value set in a Custom Field counts toward a lifetime total of 60 (Custom Fields uses).

Is Notion free for a small team?

For one person, yes, without a block limit. With two or more members the free plan allows a limited number of blocks; once it is reached you can still read, edit and organise, but not add new content (pricing FAQ).

Can Claude work inside both?

Yes, both run MCP servers (ClickUp setup). Notion's help page warns that connected tools act with your full Notion permissions, and only Enterprise admins can restrict which AI apps connect (Notion MCP).
