Motion vs Notion: Who Puts the Work on Your Calendar

The short answer: if your tasks already live in Notion and the trouble is that none of them ever get time on the calendar, try the free fix first: Notion Calendar comes with Notion's free plan, shows every dated item from a connected database, and lets you drag each one into a slot (Notion pricing, Calendar guide). If every task carries an estimate and a deadline and the week still overflows, Motion does the placing for you, at $29 a month for one person on Pro AI billed annually or $49 billed monthly, and $19 a seat for teams billed annually (Motion pricing). Both checked on 26 October 2026. Notion holds the plan. Motion decides when each piece of it happens.
Disclosure: I may earn a commission through some links on this site. It does not change what this page says.
Check these first:
- A year for one person. For example, Motion Pro AI as an individual costs 12 x $29 = $348 billed annually, or 12 x $49 = $588 billed monthly (Motion pricing). Notion's free plan already covers one person without a block limit, and a calendar-connected agent needs Business at 12 x $20 = $240 a year billed yearly (Notion pricing).
- The fields your tasks already have. Motion places a task from its start date, duration, deadline and priority (what auto-scheduling considers). A Notion item with a date but no start and end time lands as an all-day event at the top of the day and blocks nothing (Calendar guide). Count how many of next week's tasks carry a duration today.
- How often you move things by hand. Tally every task you drag or reschedule yourself in one week. In Notion that tally is the job; in Motion it should fall toward zero, and if it does not, the estimates are wrong rather than the tool.
Side by side on the calendar
| How it works | Motion | Notion with Notion Calendar |
|---|---|---|
| A task gets a time slot | Auto-scheduling places it in free working hours, splitting long tasks into chunks (reference) | You drag the dated item to a time, and the database updates to match (Calendar guide) |
| A meeting lands on planned work | Events marked busy are unavailable time, and tasks move around them | The calendar shows both; you move one of them |
| Calendars connected | Google, Outlook and iCloud (integrations) | Google and Apple iCloud, with busy blocks copied from a personal calendar |
| AI in the plan | AI Chat; 7,500 credits per seat on Pro AI | Notion Agent and calendar-connected Custom Agents on Business (calendar connection) |
| Booking links | Booking links with availability rules (booking links) | Share-availability links that can skip busy events |
| Free option | None; sign-up takes billing details and a $1 card hold (account FAQ) | Free plan, Notion Calendar included |
Where they part
Placement by rule, or by hand
Motion's scheduler respects working hours and breaks, chunks long work, and favours sooner deadlines and higher priorities (reference). Notion Calendar never decides anything: it shows your database on a grid, and the decisions are yours. If you enjoy planning Monday morning, that is a feature. If Monday's plan is dead by Tuesday lunch, it is the problem.
Which documents each tool keeps
Notion is pages and databases first, with sites, forms and charts on top (pricing). Motion's plans list AI Docs, Wiki and Notes beside projects and the calendar (pricing), so a small team can keep briefs there. A team with years of Notion wiki would keep the wiki and send only the tasks to Motion. Motion's integrations page lists no Notion connector, so that link runs through Zapier or Motion's API, which is open to every user (integrations).
Prices, checked on 26 October 2026
In USD per month, from the Motion and Notion pricing pages.
| Billing | Motion Pro AI | Motion Business AI | Notion Plus | Notion Business |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| One person, billed annually | $29 | $39 | $10 | $20 |
| One person, billed monthly | $49 | $69 | $12 | $24 |
| Per team seat, billed annually | $19 | $29 | $10 | $20 |
| Per team seat, billed monthly | $29 | $49 | $12 | $24 |
Motion's Pro AI lists 7,500 AI credits and Business AI 15,000 (pricing). Notion's Free plan costs nothing and includes Notion Calendar, and its Custom Agents run only on Business or Enterprise (Custom Agents).
One agent step: a focus block for every ready task
On Notion Business, a Custom Agent can do a slice of what Motion does, with a person in the loop. Give the agent a Notion trigger on your campaign task database, fired when a task's status property is updated to Ready (Custom Agents). Connect your calendar under Tools and Access with Read and write permission, and instruct the agent to find a free two-hour slot before the task's due date and create an event for it (calendar connection). Leave Require confirmation switched on. The human check is that switch: each proposed block waits for you to approve or cancel it, and Notion's help page states that with it off, the agent changes events and sends invites without approval. Motion does the same placement natively, for every task, and its AI Chat asks before changing anything you ask it to change.
Motion's homepage promises cancellation in one click, and its cancellation article completes the sentence: cancelling does not trigger a refund, and purchases are non-refundable (homepage, cancel article). The click stops the next charge, not the one already taken. So start on monthly billing, even though the annual figure is the one the pricing page shows first.
The free test, in Notion
Before paying anyone, give every task for next week a start and end time in your Notion database and connect that database to Notion Calendar (Calendar guide). The collisions show up at once. If the blocks fit and you kept to them, Notion is enough. If they did not fit, or the plan collapsed by Wednesday and nobody had time to redraw it, that redrawing is the work Motion's scheduler does all week.
Choose Motion if your job is
- Fitting a full task list into the hours your calendar really has, re-planned every time a meeting lands.
- Running repeatable projects whose tasks each have one owner, a duration and a deadline.
- Handing the Monday planning session to software for $29 a month as one person, billed annually (pricing).
Choose Notion if your job is
- Keeping briefs, notes and the task database together, and placing the work yourself.
- Starting free: Notion Calendar is included, with share-availability links that skip busy events.
- Adding a calendar agent later on Business, with confirmation switched on.
More on Motion's plans is in the Motion entry, and how to use Motion turns a campaign brief into a scheduled project. Motion against a meeting-first calendar is covered in Reclaim.ai vs Motion, against shared boards in Motion vs monday.com, and Notion against a task-first workspace in ClickUp vs Notion.
FAQ
Does Notion schedule tasks automatically?
Notion Calendar shows dated items and leaves the timing to you; items without a start and end time sit as all-day events (Calendar guide). On Business, a Custom Agent with a calendar connection can find time and create events, which is as close as Notion's documentation comes (calendar connection).
Can Motion read my Notion tasks?
Not through a listed integration. Motion's integrations page names Google Calendar, Outlook, iCloud, Gmail, Zoom, Teams, Meet, Siri and Zapier, and its API is available to every user (integrations).
Will Motion move my meetings?
No. Busy events count as unavailable time, and auto-scheduling places tasks around them (reference).
