The short answer: if a five-person team's launches slip because nobody's week has room for the tasks, Motion books every task into each person's calendar and re-plans when meetings land, for 5 x $19 = $95 a month on Pro AI billed annually (Motion pricing). If they slip because nobody can see who owns what by when, monday.com Standard gives the team a shared board with calendar and Gantt views for 5 x $12 = $60 a month billed yearly, and leaves the scheduling to people (monday.com pricing). Both checked on 26 October 2026. Short of hours, Motion. Short of visibility, monday.com.

Test the week, not the tool:
- Seats in both billing modes. For example, five people on Motion Pro AI pay $95 a month billed annually or 5 x $29 = $145 billed monthly; on monday.com Standard, $60 billed yearly or 5 x $14 = $70 monthly (Motion, monday.com).
- The estimates you already hold. Motion places a task from its start date, duration, deadline and priority, inside working hours and around events marked busy (auto-scheduling reference). Count next week's tasks that carry a duration and a deadline; the rest is setup work before Motion can help.
- Work that several people share. In Motion a task belongs to one person, because it sits in one calendar; involving three people means three copies (team FAQ). If most of your work is shared review, a board fits it better.
- Tasks finished by their deadline, per week. Read it for the four weeks before and after the switch.
How each handles the week
| Situation | Motion | monday.com |
|---|---|---|
| Deciding when work happens | Placed in each person's calendar by deadline and priority, split into chunks (reference) | Dates set in timeline and date columns, shown on calendar and Gantt views from Standard (pricing) |
| A meeting lands on planned work | Busy events are treated as unavailable and tasks are placed around them | The board shows the clash; a person or a rule moves the date |
| Free option | No free plan; the trial asks for billing details and holds $1 (account FAQ) | Free for up to 2 seats and 3 boards |
| Entry team price, billed yearly | Pro AI, $19 a seat | Standard, $12 a seat, from 3 seats |
| AI included | 7,500 credits per seat a month on Pro AI, 15,000 on Business AI | 2,000 credits a month for the account on Standard, 3,000 on Pro |
| Changing your mind | Purchases are non-refundable (cancel article) | A yearly plan cancelled within 30 days is refunded the remaining balance (pricing FAQ) |
What separates them
Who decides when the work happens
Motion takes the decision away from the person: each task's duration, deadline and priority set where it goes, and the plan reshuffles when a meeting or a late task moves something (reference). monday.com leaves the timing to people: a board shows who owns what by when, and rules notify or shift items only where someone wrote them. A team that over-commits needs the first. A team that under-communicates needs the second.
One owner per task, or a board everyone reads
Motion's one-calendar-per-task rule keeps each person's week true to their hours and makes shared tasks awkward. monday.com's boards take guests from Standard and sit on the same platform as monday CRM, service and dev, so a launch plan can be read by sales and support without a Motion seat each. Motion's own comparison page says monday makes managers assign tasks without considering workload; monday's trial article lists a Workload View among the Pro features, so test that claim during a trial rather than taking either page's word.
What each plan adds next
Motion's Business AI, at $29 a seat billed annually, adds team capacity planning, advanced dashboards, timeline and Gantt charts, time tracking and permissions (pricing). monday.com's Pro, at $19, adds private boards, time tracking, advanced views and 25,000 automation actions a month (pricing).
Prices, checked on 26 October 2026
Motion, Teams tab, per seat a month: Pro AI $19 billed annually or $29 monthly, Business AI $29 or $49, from its pricing page; above 50 seats, its team FAQ points to support or the Enterprise plan. monday.com, per seat a month: Basic $9, Standard $12 and Pro $19 billed yearly, or $12, $14 and $24 monthly, from 3 seats, before tax (pricing).
monday.com's pricing page opens with 10 seats and yearly billing preselected, so the first Standard total a visitor reads is $120 a month for twice the seats a five-person team needs, committed for a year (pricing). That preset sells seat count and term before anyone has priced the team in front of them. Set the selector to 5 and the toggle to monthly, and compare from there.
One agent step: this week's risks, drafted
Motion's AI Chat works inside the workspace with Motion's data connected: open it from the sidebar, @ mention the launch project, and ask which of this week's tasks are at risk of missing their deadline and for a draft status note to the team. Motion's help page says AI Chat always asks before making changes. The human check: the project lead reads the draft against the calendar's own warnings, edits the note, and approves any rescheduling AI Chat proposes. On monday.com, an AI agent built in the agent builder can run the same weekly job on a trigger, inside the boards it is granted (AI agents article).
Choose Motion if your job is
- Fitting a team's projects into the hours its calendars really hold, with the plan re-made when meetings land.
- Running repeatable launches where each task has one owner and an estimate.
- Seeing which deadline is at risk while there is still a week to act on it.
Choose monday.com if your job is
- Giving a team, its clients and other departments one board that shows owners, dates and status.
- Starting free for two people, then paying $12 a seat from 3 seats on Standard (pricing).
- Reviewing and approving shared work, where several people touch the same item.

The free test on paper
Neither trial is needed to find out which problem you have. List next week's tasks with an hour estimate for each, add the hours per person, and set them against the free hours in each person's calendar. If the hours do not fit, the problem is capacity, and Motion's scheduling addresses it. If they fit and work still slips, the problem is visibility and handovers, and monday.com's free plan for two people is enough to test a shared board before anyone pays.
FAQ
Does Motion have a free plan?
No. Its pricing page offers a free trial, sign-up asks for billing details with a $1 card hold that is released within days, and its cancellation article states that purchases are non-refundable (account FAQ, cancel article).
Will Motion move my meetings?
No. Events marked busy are treated as unavailable time and tasks are scheduled around them (reference).
Does monday.com schedule tasks into calendars automatically?
Its plans list calendar, timeline and Gantt views, automations and AI agents, not calendar-based auto-scheduling by duration (pricing). Dates on a board are set by people or by the rules they write.
