The short answer: the 14-day trial is long enough to see Google positions and your brand's place in AI answers side by side. Add the site and its main market, import keywords from Search Console and prune them, set location, device and intent tags, add competitors, switch on the AI Overview column, add a short list of AI prompts, connect the MCP server for a weekly question, and schedule one report.

Two separate questions get asked about search now. Where does the site rank, and does the assistant name the brand when a buyer asks. Nightwatch answers both from one account, and the setup below follows its help centre. For plans and prices, see the Nightwatch glossary entry.
Before you add anything:
- Decide which combinations you will track. Nightwatch bills each keyword once per location, search engine, language and device, per its multi-location article. For example, 80 keywords on Google and Bing, mobile only, in the Netherlands and Belgium come to 80 x 2 x 2 = 320 tracked keywords.
- Keep the prompt list short. Starter includes 50 prompts and Professional 150, per the pricing page. Twenty prompts that sound like real buyer questions tell you more than fifty variants of one.
- Use what Search Console already knows. Its queries start the tracker with keywords that already earn impressions.
- Write the Monday question now. For example: which tracked pages lost three or more positions this week, and did any prompt stop naming the brand. That question shapes the report in the last step.
What you need
- An account. The trial runs 14 days and needs no credit card, per the sign-up article.
- Search Console and Google Analytics access for the site.
- Two to five competitor domains.
- An MCP client such as Claude Desktop or Cursor, for the agent step.
First, add the site and its market
On first login, the onboarding wizard walks through adding the website, setting the primary target market, importing keywords and traffic data, managing keywords and adding competitors, per getting started in 5 steps. For later sites, the Add URLs button at the bottom of the left sidebar reopens the wizard and asks for a URL group, per adding a new website.
Second, import the keywords, then prune them
In the keyword step, review the keywords Nightwatch has already discovered, or click Import Keywords from Search Console and take all of them or a selection, per the import guide. A CSV works too, with columns for keyword, country, precise location, search engine, language, device, tags and translation, per the keyword guide. Keywords with special characters such as @ are not supported, because the Google Ads API returns no volume for them. Prune here: a keyword you will never act on still uses the allowance.
Third, set market, device and intent
Before saving, change the country where it differs from the main market, switch on Precise Location for city or postcode tracking, and choose the search engine and device, per the keyword guide. Apply AI Tags sorts keywords into informational, navigational, commercial and transactional intent. Tag by page or product as well, so a View can filter the report later.
Fourth, add competitors
Open a URL dashboard, click the settings icon next to Overview, and enter competitor URLs in the competitors tab, or press Auto Discover, per the competitors guide. Competitors do not count against tracked keywords. Their data appears after a day, because Nightwatch needs another crawl.
Fifth, switch on AI Overview tracking
No setup is needed beyond a column. Add AI Snippet Rank to the keyword table to see positions in the top 3 places of Google's AI Overview, and Available SERP Features to see every feature where the site appears, per the AI Overview guide. The guide warns that AI Overviews make rankings more volatile, so read a single day's change with care.
Sixth, add the AI prompts
Generate candidates with Prompt Research, which runs in the SEO Agent from a template or your own instructions, then go to LLM Tracking > Prompts > Add Prompt and set provider, location, language and tags, per the LLM tracking guide. Write prompts as a buyer would ask them, not as search queries. Add your brand and two or three rivals under Brand Entities, so share of voice has something to compare. The guide says SEO Agent credits are enabled through support if your account lacks them.
Seventh, let an agent read it, and check by hand
Connect the SEO MCP server by pasting Nightwatch's config snippet, with the endpoint and your authorisation header, into the client's settings, per the MCP page. Then ask the Monday question in plain words: which tracked keywords fell this week, and which prompts stopped naming the brand. The agent answers from live data and drafts the summary.
A person checks before anyone rewrites a page. Nightwatch's accuracy article explains why a search on your own laptop is no proof: location, language and device settings differ. Use the Search Simulator extension, or an incognito window behind a VPN in the tracked location, to confirm the drop first.
Last, schedule one report
Go to Reports, click Add report, pick the URL or View, choose a template (Basic, Progress or Competitor), arrange the elements, and set schedule and recipients, per the reports guide and the daily report article. Reports export as PDF, CSV or HTML.
What the help centre warns about
- Trusting your own browser. Manual checks from your device will often differ, per the accuracy article.
- Deleting keywords to make room. It frees allowance and permanently erases their history, per the keyword limit article.
- Downloading a report too early. Keywords need more than a day of data, and the date range must include the day they were added, per the empty report article.
- Expecting competitor data on day one. It starts after the next crawl, per the competitors guide.
Every new account also gets a daily email of its top 10 gains and losses. It brings you back to the dashboard each morning, while decisions about pages take weeks to pay off; account settings move it to weekly or monthly, or switch it off, per the reports guide.
FAQ
When do rankings update?
Daily, at 24-hour intervals the system chooses, per the refresh article. Priority in the midnight UTC queue is a paid service quoted on request.
Can I delete keywords without losing anything?
No. Removing a keyword permanently erases its tracking history, per the keyword limit article. Upgrade instead if the history matters.
Does the MCP server need a particular plan?
No. The pricing FAQ puts it on every plan, Starter included, and lists Claude, Cursor and ChatGPT among the clients.
