The short answer: consider Nightwatch if a whole team or a client roster reads ranking and AI-answer reports and you do not want to pay per seat: Starter tracks 500 keywords and 50 AI prompts for €99 a month, or €79 a month billed yearly (Nightwatch pricing). Consider SE Ranking if one SEO lead also needs backlink research, keyword research and audits behind the same login: Core tracks 2,000 keywords and 100 prompts a day for $129 a month billed monthly, with one manager seat (SE Ranking pricing). Both were checked on 24 October 2026.

Few people search for this pair, and that is fair: one is a tracker and the other a suite. They meet in the middle, because both check Google positions and AI answers every day and both hand that data to AI assistants. Past the middle they diverge, and how you count keywords and people tells you which side you are on.
Count before you choose:
- Keywords, the way Nightwatch counts them. Each location, search engine, language or device is a separate keyword, per its keyword guide. For example, 80 keywords tracked in Amsterdam, Utrecht and Rotterdam, on mobile and desktop, is 80 x 3 x 2 = 480, just inside Starter's 500 on the pricing page. Add a fourth city and you are on Professional.
- People, the way SE Ranking counts them. Core includes one manager seat, and only one session per login can be active at a time; for view-only colleagues there are guest links on Growth (SE Ranking pricing FAQ). Nightwatch's FAQ says it charges no per-seat fees (Nightwatch pricing), though its plan table marks unlimited user seats from Professional.
- Start from what Search Console already knows. Nightwatch imports keywords straight from Search Console during setup (import guide), and SE Ranking lists Search Console among the integrations on Core (SE Ranking pricing). Neither list has to be typed from memory.
- Run one comparison during the trials. Pick ten keywords and five prompts, read both tools on the same morning, and set each against Search Console's average position for the same pages.
Who each one is for
Nightwatch is a rank tracker that grew an AI layer. Its plans are priced by how much you track, every tool sits on every plan, and the pitch is the whole team in one account: daily checks on Google, YouTube, Bing, Yahoo, DuckDuckGo and Google Maps, three years of history, and AI answers from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Mode and AI Overview (Nightwatch pricing). It suits an agency or an in-house team whose reports go to many readers.
SE Ranking is an SEO platform with tracking at its centre. Core adds unlimited keyword, competitor and backlink research, a website audit of 250,000 pages a month, and connections to Looker Studio, Matomo, Analytics and Search Console (SE Ranking pricing). It suits a lead who does the research and the reporting, and who would otherwise pay for a second tool.

Every cell comes from the Nightwatch pricing page and the SE Ranking pricing page, both read on 24 October 2026. Nightwatch bills in euros, SE Ranking in USD.
Where each bill grows
Nightwatch has no add-ons; it has caps. Starter collects 1,500 AI answers a month, runs 100 keyword researches and 100 SEO Agent credits, and Professional raises those to 4,500, 500 and 1,000 (Nightwatch pricing). The plan you need is the one whose first cap your work reaches.
SE Ranking grows by add-ons. AI Search costs $89 a month on monthly billing, or $71.20 annually, for 200 more prompts and competitor research across AI Overviews, AI Mode and ChatGPT. The Agency Pack for white-label reporting is $69 a month and the API add-on $45 a month, both annual only (SE Ranking pricing). List the add-ons you would buy before comparing Core with anything.
A Monday brief written by an agent
Nightwatch's MCP server connects Claude, Cursor, ChatGPT and other clients to your rankings, AI visibility and audits, and its own example workflow is a Monday brief: the agent queries rankings, runs the latest audit and posts a digest to Slack before the stand-up (Nightwatch MCP). The human check is where the digest lands. Send it to a channel the SEO lead reads first, and forward nothing to a client or a board until the biggest movers have been opened in the dashboard. SE Ranking's hosted MCP server offers more than 180 tools and ships open-source Claude Skills, among them a technical audit that returns a top-ten fix list ranked by impact and effort (SE Ranking MCP).
Both trials are built around the work you put into them. Nightwatch's FAQ says an uncancelled 14-day trial is billed automatically as a monthly subscription, and SE Ranking's FAQ says payments are non-refundable outside service failures (Nightwatch pricing, SE Ranking pricing). The keywords you load become the reason to stay. Export the list, and make the decision before day 14.
Choose Nightwatch if
- Your job is reporting rankings and AI answers to many readers, and seat fees would decide the budget.
- You track locally, by city or postcode, and need search engines beyond Google in the same table.
- You want every tool on the entry plan, with the MCP server included.
Choose SE Ranking if
- Your job also covers backlink research, keyword research and audits, so one platform replaces two.
- One or two people do the work, and the keyword volume per dollar matters more than seats.
- You expect to add white-label reporting or API access as separate, priced pieces.
More detail sits in the Nightwatch glossary entry and the SE Ranking glossary entry.
What a position report cannot tell you
Rankings and AI mentions are inputs. When the question in the meeting turns into whether organic search moved revenue, no table of positions settles it, however daily the data. Later, if you want that check run continuously, a causal attribution tool like Causality Engine does it. Disclosure: I founded it.
FAQ
Which one tracks more keywords for the money?
SE Ranking Core, at 2,000 keywords a day for $129 on monthly billing, against Nightwatch Starter's 500 for €99, on the SE Ranking and Nightwatch pricing pages, checked on 24 October 2026. Remember that Nightwatch counts each location and device as a keyword.
Can both be queried from Claude or ChatGPT?
Yes. Nightwatch lists its MCP server on every plan, Starter included (Nightwatch pricing FAQ), and SE Ranking includes MCP access on Core and Growth, drawing on each plan's API credits (SE Ranking MCP).
Do the trials need a credit card?
Neither page asks for one. SE Ranking's 14-day trial tracks 750 keywords and 20 AI prompts a day across 10 projects (pricing FAQ); Nightwatch's runs 14 days with the full toolkit, and its FAQ still warns that an uncancelled trial turns into a paid month.
