The short answer: you are not misreading the two pricing pages: both entry plans cost $129 a month on monthly billing, checked on 24 October 2026, and they spend it on different things. SE Ranking Core tracks 2,000 keywords a day across 10 projects (SE Ranking pricing); Ahrefs Lite tracks 750 for one user, with 1,000 credits a month and six months of history (Ahrefs pricing). Choose SE Ranking if your job is reporting rankings across several sites. Choose Ahrefs if your job is link and competitor research, and budget for Standard at $249 if you need two years of history.

Disclosure: I may earn a commission through some links on this site. It does not change what this page says.

Ahrefs changes the question from how many keywords you can watch to how far back and how deep you can dig. Its pricing page leads with its own web index and calls its crawler the second most active in the world, which is the vendor's claim and not something a buyer can check from outside (Ahrefs pricing). SE Ranking's argument is coverage per dollar, and on that it is easy to check.

Same price, different meters:

  1. Cost per tracked keyword at the entry price. $129 / 2,000 = $0.0645 a keyword on SE Ranking Core, and $129 / 750 = $0.172 on Ahrefs Lite, from the SE Ranking and Ahrefs pricing pages. If tracking is the job, that ratio is most of the answer.
  2. Begin with the free tier you are entitled to. Ahrefs Free gives verified site owners Site Audit, Site Explorer and Web Analytics at no cost, and a cancelled paid plan falls back to it (Ahrefs Free, pricing FAQ). Run it beside Search Console on your own site before paying for either.
  3. Count who logs in. Lite includes one user and allows two more at $40 a month each (Ahrefs pricing). Core includes one manager seat, allows one active session per login, and sells extra seats (SE Ranking pricing FAQ).
  4. Check the history window against your reporting. A year-on-year comparison needs at least twelve months of data. Ahrefs keeps 6 months on Lite, 2 years on Standard and 5 on Advanced (Ahrefs pricing); SE Ranking adds history across the project's lifetime on Growth (SE Ranking pricing).

Three differences that decide it

Volume per dollar

At the same $129, SE Ranking tracks 2,000 keywords and audits 250,000 pages a month across 10 projects, and Core includes unlimited keyword, competitor and backlink research (SE Ranking pricing). Ahrefs Lite tracks 750 keywords and caps each user at 1,000 credits a month, where Standard and above have no per-user cap (Ahrefs pricing). A team that reports rankings to clients will run out of Lite first.

Depth, and the plan it lives on

Ahrefs reserves the deeper tools for Standard: Content Explorer, batch analysis, broken backlink and broken link reports, keyword clusters and search intents, plus two years of history, for $249 a month on monthly billing (Ahrefs pricing). If your work is link research, the fair comparison is SE Ranking Core against Ahrefs Standard, not against Lite.

Who can share it

Both entry plans are sized for one person. Ahrefs adds users at $40, $60 or $80 a month by tier; SE Ranking's Growth plan comes with three manager seats and guest links for view-only readers (SE Ranking pricing, Ahrefs pricing).

Annual prices compared

SE Ranking, read on 24 October 2026: Core $129 on monthly billing or $103.20 a month billed annually; Growth $279 or $223.20. Add-ons: AI Search $89 a month or $71.20 annually, the Agency Pack $69 a month and the API add-on $45 a month, both annual only (SE Ranking pricing).

Ahrefs, read the same day: Lite $129 a month or $1,290 a year; Standard $249 or $2,490 a year; Advanced $449 or $4,490 a year; Enterprise $1,499 a month on an annual commitment. A $29 Starter plan and Ahrefs Free sit below, and Brand Radar AI starts at $199 a month (Ahrefs pricing).

An agent pulling link data into n8n

Ahrefs hosts an MCP server for Lite and above, with step-by-step guides for Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot Studio and n8n (Ahrefs MCP). A job that fits: an n8n workflow asks the agent each week for new and lost referring domains of three competitors and writes the result to a shared sheet. The agent gathers and sorts; a person decides which domains are worth an outreach email, because the agent has no view of relationships or brand risk. Two limits from the docs: each call spends API units from your monthly allowance, and a key created through OAuth for MCP defaults to 200,000 units a month, which a workspace admin can change. SE Ranking's equivalent is its hosted server with more than 180 tools (SE Ranking MCP).

Ahrefs meters several things on top of the plan, and once pay-as-you-go is enabled its FAQ says you are charged automatically when usage passes the plan's limits (pricing FAQ). An entry plan with a per-user credit cap is designed to be outgrown. Leave pay-as-you-go off for the first month, read what you used, then pick the tier.

Choose SE Ranking if

  • Your job is tracking and reporting rankings across several sites or clients.
  • You want keyword, competitor and backlink research included rather than metered by credits.
  • You want annual billing at the lower of the two entry prices.

Choose Ahrefs if

  • Your job is link research and competitive analysis, and you can fund Standard.
  • Your sites are verified, so Ahrefs Free and unlimited verified projects carry part of the load.
  • You plan to feed Ahrefs data into agents or n8n through its documented MCP server.

More on SE Ranking in its glossary entry. Ahrefs has no entry on this site; its own pages are at ahrefs.com.

FAQ

Is there a free version of either?

Ahrefs Free, for sites whose ownership you verify, covers Site Audit, Site Explorer and Web Analytics (Ahrefs Free). SE Ranking offers a 14-day trial without a card, with 10 projects, 750 keywords and 20 AI prompts a day (SE Ranking pricing FAQ).

Which is cheaper on annual billing?

SE Ranking Core, at $103.20 a month against $108 for Ahrefs Lite, on the SE Ranking and Ahrefs pricing pages, checked on 24 October 2026.

Can I use either from an AI assistant?

Yes. Ahrefs' remote MCP server works on Lite and above (Ahrefs MCP), and SE Ranking includes MCP access on its plans, running on their API credits (SE Ranking MCP).
