The short answer: for a team of two or three that reports rankings weekly and spends most of its research time on links and content, Ahrefs Lite fits at $129 a month, with 750 tracked keywords and 6 months of history (Ahrefs pricing). Its rank tracker updates weekly on every plan, and its pricing page lists no trial. If someone needs positions every day, a 7-day trial before paying, or 10,000 rows per report at the entry price, Semrush's SEO plan at $139 a month is the better match (Semrush pricing).

Disclosure: I may earn a commission through some links on this site. It does not change what this page says.

At the entry tier these two cost $10 apart and do most of the same work: keyword research, competitor analysis, backlinks, a site audit and rank tracking. So the choice comes down to details that only show up in the plan tables, and to which one your team will open every morning.

Rule of thumb:

  1. Price the team you have. Three people cost $129 + 2 x $40 = $209 a month on Ahrefs Lite and $139 + 2 x $45 = $229 on Semrush's SEO plan. A fourth person forces Ahrefs up to Standard, because Lite allows only 2 extra users: $249 + 3 x $60 = $429, against $139 + 3 x $45 = $274 on Semrush. Monthly billing, from the Ahrefs and Semrush pricing pages.
  2. Start from the sites you can verify. Ahrefs Free gives Site Explorer and Site Audit for websites you verify, with no time limit, per its free account page. Your own domain costs nothing to analyse there, which leaves the paid question to competitor research.
  3. Ask how far back you look. Ahrefs Lite keeps 6 months of history and Standard 2 years. Semrush's SEO and Starter plans show no historical data; Pro+ at $299 does, per the two plan tables (Ahrefs, Semrush).
  4. Test both against what you know is true. Take your top 50 Search Console queries and check how many of them each tool shows your domain ranking for, in your country. The one that matches your own data more closely is the one to trust about competitors.

USD, from the Ahrefs pricing page and the Semrush pricing page, both checked on 24 October 2026. Ahrefs Advanced is $449 a month and Enterprise $1,499 a month on an annual commitment; Semrush Advanced is quoted on request.

Three differences that decide it

Daily or weekly positions

Ahrefs lists the Rank Tracker update frequency as weekly on Lite, Standard, Advanced and Enterprise, per its plan comparison. Semrush sells every plan as keywords tracked daily, per its pricing page. For a monthly board report the difference is invisible. For a shop watching category pages after a migration or a Google update, a week is a long time to wait.

Trying before paying

Asked about discounts or free trials, Ahrefs' pricing FAQ says it never runs discounts and points website owners to Ahrefs Free; no trial is listed for Lite or above. The same FAQ says refunds are not issued in general, with a request possible on a monthly plan that has not been used, and the page offers a $29 Starter plan for keyword and competitor lookups, per the pricing page. Semrush offers a 7-day trial on its paid plans and a free plan beside it, per its subscriptions article, though exports stay off during a trial.

How much you can pull at once

At the entry tier Semrush returns up to 10,000 results per report and Ahrefs 2,500 rows, per the Semrush and Ahrefs plan tables. If your research ends in a spreadsheet of a competitor's keywords, that cap is felt on the first export. At the second tier both reach 30,000.

One step an agent can take

Ahrefs runs a hosted MCP server for every paid plan from Lite, with setup guides for Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot Studio and n8n, per its MCP documentation. Lite allows 100 rows per request and 200,000 API units a month, per the SEO MCP page. A practical job: an n8n workflow runs every Monday, asks the MCP for organic traffic trends of ten named competitors, and drafts a short summary of who grew. A person reads the summary and checks any big swing in Ahrefs itself before it goes to the team. Semrush's MCP is read-only and includes 50,000 MCP API units on Starter and Pro+, per its MCP article.

Each vendor's scoreboard

Both publish a comparison, and each wins its own. Semrush's comparison page says it has the larger backlink and Google keyword databases. Ahrefs' page on Semrush counts its own 35 trillion backlinks as live and Semrush's 43 trillion as live and dead, and puts its keyword count at 28.7 billion against 26.7 billion for Semrush, while Semrush's own homepage says 29 billion. Each count is defined by the vendor that publishes it, and neither measures your market. The Search Console test in the list above does.

A year of each, checked on 24 October 2026

The plan table above carries the monthly and annual rates for the two lower tiers. Over a year on annual billing, Ahrefs Lite comes to 12 x $108 = $1,296 and Standard to 12 x $208 = $2,496, while Semrush's SEO plan comes to 12 x $117.33 = $1,407.96 and Pro+ to 12 x $248.17 = $2,978.04, using the Ahrefs and Semrush pricing pages. Above those, Ahrefs Advanced bills $374 a month on annual billing, and Semrush's Starter plan sits between its two at $199 or $165.17. Both vendors say annual billing saves up to 17%. All figures in USD.

Choose Semrush if

  • Your job needs daily positions, or quick reactions to ranking drops.
  • You want to try the paid plan for a week before paying.
  • Your research ends in large exports at the entry price.

Choose Ahrefs if

  • Your job centres on backlinks, content gaps and competitor traffic, reported weekly.
  • You want months of history without moving to a $299 plan.
  • Your own sites can be analysed on the free account while the paid seat goes to competitors.

Background on Semrush: the Semrush entry. Ahrefs has no entry on this site yet; its plans are on ahrefs.com.

FAQ

Does Ahrefs offer a free trial?

Not for Lite and above, going by its pricing page. The FAQ on discounts and trials points website owners to Ahrefs Free instead, which gives limited access to Site Explorer and Site Audit, per the Ahrefs pricing page, checked on 24 October 2026.

Which one tracks rankings more often?

Semrush, which tracks keywords daily on every plan. Ahrefs updates its Rank Tracker weekly on all plans, including Enterprise, per the two pricing pages (Semrush, Ahrefs).

Can I connect either to Claude or ChatGPT?

Both. Ahrefs' MCP server is on every paid plan, per its SEO MCP page, and Semrush's MCP connects ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and coding tools, per its MCP article.
