The short answer: if one person does the SEO for one or two sites and checks a few dozen keyword ideas a day, KeySearch covers the job: its Starter plan costs $24 a month for 200 keyword searches a day and 80 tracked keywords (KeySearch pricing). Semrush starts to earn its price when a team needs 500 keywords checked daily, a crawler that reads 100,000 pages a month and research in more than one country, which its SEO plan sells for $139 a month on monthly billing (Semrush pricing).
Disclosure: I may earn a commission through some links on this site. It does not change what this page says.
The two are less alike than their marketing suggests. KeySearch is a difficulty checker with a small rank tracker and an auditor built around it. Semrush is a research database sold by the toolkit, with tracking and site auditing on the same login. What you are buying is how much of that database your week will touch.
What decides it:
- The yearly bill. Billed annually, KeySearch Starter is 12 x $20 = $240 and the Semrush SEO plan is 12 x $117.33 = $1,407.96, a gap of $1,167.96 before anyone else gets a seat, per the KeySearch and Semrush pricing pages.
- The query list you already own. Export the Search Console queries that bring clicks and count the ones worth watching. Up to 80 fits KeySearch Starter, up to 200 fits its Pro plan at $48, and past that you are at Semrush's 500, per the same KeySearch and Semrush pages.
- The size of your site. Count the URLs in your sitemap. KeySearch audits 2,000 pages a month on Starter and 5,000 on Pro; Semrush's SEO plan crawls 100,000 a month with up to 20,000 per website, according to its plan comparison.
- The test you will judge it by. Pick 20 keywords before the trial, note where your pages stand in Search Console, and look again 60 days later. That movement, not a score inside either app, says whether the subscription earned its keep.

Where the gap is real
Crawling the whole site
KeySearch's auditor is sized for a blog or a brochure site. For example, a site of 500 URLs fits four full audits a month on Starter (2,000 / 500 = 4), while a shop with 8,000 product pages cannot be crawled once even on Pro, whose cap is 5,000, per the KeySearch pricing section. Semrush's SEO plan reads up to 20,000 pages per monitored website, and Pro+ adds JavaScript rendering for sites that build pages in the browser, per its plan table.
Who logs in
Semrush charges by the person. Every plan includes one user, and each extra costs $45 a month on SEO and Starter or $80 on Pro+, so a team of three on the SEO plan pays $139 + 2 x $45 = $229 a month on monthly billing, using the Semrush pricing page. KeySearch's FAQ lists shared projects, task assignment and reports as Pro features, and its homepage shows no per-seat price.
More than one market
Semrush's homepage claims 142 geo databases. KeySearch's FAQ says it tracks keywords across many languages and locations without giving a count. If your week covers Dutch, Belgian and German searches, run three known keywords per market through both trials and compare the volumes with what Google Ads shows you.
One step an agent can take
Semrush documents a read-only MCP connection that lets Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor query its keyword and competitor data; Starter and Pro+ include 50,000 MCP API units that refresh on each renewal date, per its MCP article. Used for this job, the agent pulls volume and difficulty for your 20 test keywords and drafts a ranked shortlist. A person then checks each one against the page that would rank for it and its Search Console clicks before anything is briefed. KeySearch keeps its AI inside the app: Foresight, on Pro, reads your niche, authority and rankings and proposes keywords, per the homepage. Give its list the same check.
Run the free test first
Open a Semrush free account, which needs no card and gives one demo project and 10 reports a day, per the pricing page, and start the KeySearch 7-day trial the same morning. Put the same 20 keywords through both. If KeySearch's difficulty scores and SERP table answer your questions inside a week, the bigger subscription can wait, and that is a perfectly good outcome.

Read the vendor comparisons with their purpose in mind. KeySearch's own Semrush comparison still prices Semrush as Pro at $129.95, Guru at $249.95 and Business at $499.95, plan names the Semrush pricing page no longer shows, and promises a 30-day trial where KeySearch's homepage now says 7 days. A comparison page exists to win the comparison, so check each figure in it against the other vendor's own page.
Choose KeySearch if
- Your job is finding keywords one site can win, and one or two people do it.
- The rank list you care about is 200 keywords or fewer, and the site fits inside its audit cap.
- A low fixed bill matters more than research across several markets.
Choose Semrush if
- Your job is competitor and market research across countries, not only difficulty checks.
- You need daily positions for hundreds of keywords and a crawler that covers a large site.
- You want AI search tracking or an agent connection on the same login.

FAQ
Does Semrush have anything cheaper than $139 a month?
The SEO plan billed annually works out at $117.33 a month, and a free plan with one demo project and 10 reports a day needs no card, per the Semrush pricing page, checked on 24 October 2026.
Can a team share a KeySearch account?
On Pro. The FAQ on the KeySearch homepage lists team collaboration as a Pro feature, with shared projects, assigned tasks and reports. Starter does not list it.
Does the $139 Semrush plan track AI answers?
Partly. The SEO plan tracks performance in AI search and opens AI visibility reports for any domain, but a dedicated quota of 50 tracked prompts starts on Starter at $199 a month, according to the subscriptions article.
