OptinMonster vs Mailchimp: Popup Layer or Built-In Form

The short answer: if Mailchimp already sends your email and the popup job is one welcome offer on a time, scroll or exit trigger, open Forms, then Popup forms, in your account before buying anything: the pricing page lists popup forms on Essentials, from $13 a month for 500 contacts, and on Standard and Premium, with a footnote calling the builder a beta of very limited availability (Mailchimp pricing, checked on 26 October 2026). Add OptinMonster when the job is several campaigns with referrer, cookie or schedule rules; its Mailchimp connection works on every plan, from $108 for Basic's first year (OptinMonster pricing).
Disclosure: I may earn a commission through some links on this site. It does not change what this page says.
The question underneath is whether you need a second tool at all. Mailchimp's form sits inside the platform that will email the person; OptinMonster sits on top of it and hands the address over.
Before a second tool goes on the site:
- Price the layer over two years. OptinMonster Basic costs $108 for the first year and renews at $210, so $108 + $210 = $318; an exit offer needs Pro, $444 + $870 = $1,314 (OptinMonster pricing). Mailchimp's own popup is listed as included from Essentials up (Mailchimp pricing).
- Check what your account shows today. Because the builder is a beta with very limited availability, the menu item is the fact that matters, not the feature table.
- Agree which count is the result. OptinMonster records a conversion when the form is submitted; Mailchimp adds the person only once they confirm, if double opt-in is on (OptinMonster's Mailchimp guide). Report confirmed contacts per 1,000 sessions, and take the last four weeks as the baseline.
The two set side by side
| Setting | Mailchimp popup form | OptinMonster sending to Mailchimp |
|---|---|---|
| Cost on top of Mailchimp | None listed on Essentials, Standard or Premium (pricing) | From $108 for the first year (pricing) |
| Opt-in out of the box | Single opt-in (popup form guide) | Double opt-in on in the integration (Mailchimp guide) |
| When it shows | Time on page, inactivity, quick scroll, exit intent; by device (popup form guide) | Time, scroll and URL on Basic; Exit-Intent from Pro (display rules) |
| Who sees it | New or all visitors, traffic source, geolocation, page rules | Referrer, cookie and query rules from Pro; geolocation on Growth |
| Testing | A/B test of a draft form | Split tests from Plus (pricing) |
| Status | Beta, very limited availability (pricing) | Generally sold |
What decides it
The opt-in default
Mailchimp's popup is single opt-in unless you change it (popup form guide). OptinMonster's integration starts with double opt-in switched on, and turning it off later does not release the addresses already waiting for confirmation (OptinMonster's Mailchimp guide). Neither default is the law; choose the setting deliberately and write down why. The consent questions a popup raises are worked through in the popup holdout use case.
How many campaigns, and how picky
Mailchimp's form already covers the classic set: a two-second default delay, a new-visitor default, quick scroll, exit intent, geolocation and page rules, plus scheduled start and stop dates (popup form guide). OptinMonster's case is the long tail of rules: who referred the visitor, which cookie or query string they carry, what day it is, whether they have seen another campaign (display rules). If you cannot name a campaign that needs one of those, the built-in form does the job.
People who once said no
Mailchimp does not let its API re-subscribe an address that unsubscribed or was deleted, so OptinMonster's own guide sends you back to a Mailchimp-built form, placed through its Form Embed block, if returning subscribers matter (OptinMonster's Mailchimp guide). A store with a large lapsed list should weigh that early.
What each costs to run this job
| Plan | Price, checked 26 October 2026 | What it adds here |
|---|---|---|
| Mailchimp Free | $0, up to 250 contacts and 500 sends a month | Forms to try; sending pauses past 250 contacts (plans article) |
| Mailchimp Essentials | $13 a month for 500 contacts | Popup forms listed, 3 audiences |
| Mailchimp Standard | $20 a month for 500 contacts | Popup forms, up to 200 flows, AI connectors |
| OptinMonster Basic | $108 first year, $210 renewal; or $21 billed monthly | Mailchimp integration, no Exit-Intent |
| OptinMonster Pro | $444 first year, $870 renewal; or $87 billed monthly | Exit-Intent, referrer and cookie rules, Zapier |
Mailchimp prices are monthly in USD from its pricing page; OptinMonster's come from its annual and monthly pages.
An agent for the email after the popup
The popup is half the job; the welcome sequence is the other half. Mailchimp lists connectors for Claude, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Codex and Google Workspace on Standard and Premium (Mailchimp AI tools). With the Claude connector, ask for a welcome sequence for people who joined through the popup offer; for an existing account, Mailchimp says Claude draws on your campaign history and engagement, then you move into Mailchimp to finalise and send (Mailchimp and Claude). The human check is the hand-off itself: a person compares every promise in the drafted emails with the popup's exact offer before anything is built. On the OptinMonster side, AI Popups rewrites a text field into five versions for you to pick from (announcement).
Who is paid for each address
Every address the popup collects becomes a contact in the total Mailchimp bills on, and its plans article counts unsubscribed and non-subscribed contacts in that total until they are archived (plans article). The default favours the platform: a popup that pulls in people who leave a week later still moves the account toward the next contact tier, so archive unsubscribes on a schedule.
Choose Mailchimp's popup form if
- Your job is one or two welcome or exit offers on a site already connected to Mailchimp.
- You want the form, the audience and the follow-up in one login.
- The menu item is in your account, given the beta label.
Choose OptinMonster if
- Your job is a set of campaigns that differ by referrer, page, cookie or schedule (display rules).
- You may leave Mailchimp: OptinMonster's Basic plan also lists MailerLite, Omnisend and Constant Contact (monthly pricing).
- You want double opt-in on by default.
When the forms are not the problem
Sometimes the audience is fed by a store app, two form tools and a checkout box, and nobody can say which wrote which contact. Then the stack is the problem rather than the popup, and a one-week review like the Startup Fixer, which I sell, maps it before you add another layer.
FAQ
Does Mailchimp charge extra for popup forms?
The pricing page lists popup forms as included on Essentials, Standard and Premium, and its footnote says the beta has very limited availability (Mailchimp pricing).
Why does OptinMonster show more signups than Mailchimp shows new contacts?
OptinMonster counts a submit; Mailchimp counts a confirmed subscriber. Existing subscribers filling in the form again, failed syncs and filtered disposable addresses widen the gap (OptinMonster's Mailchimp guide).
Can the popup ask for an SMS number too?
Mailchimp's popup can collect email, phone or both, but marketing texts need an approved SMS application first (popup form guide).
