The short answer: if WhatsApp is mainly where you send offers to an opted-in list and three people handle the replies, Wati is the lower bill at small volumes: Growth costs $69 a month on monthly billing and includes 15,000 broadcasts, where respond.io's cheapest plan with broadcasts is Growth at $199 (Wati pricing, respond.io pricing). If WhatsApp is where a team of up to ten qualifies and closes leads, respond.io fits better, and every message costs what Meta charges, $0.1597 per marketing message to a Dutch number, where Wati's own card charges $0.2555 (Meta pricing, Wati rate card). All checked on 26 October 2026.

Before the demo calls:

  1. Find your crossover. For example, for marketing templates to Dutch numbers the plan gap is $199 - $69 = $130 and the per-message gap is $0.2555 - $0.1597 = $0.0958, so Wati is cheaper below 130 / 0.0958 = 1,357 messages a month and respond.io above it, using the Wati and respond.io pricing pages and the two rate cards. At 6,000 messages that is $69 + $1,533 = $1,602 on Wati against $199 + $958.20 = $1,157.20 on respond.io.
  2. Count the people who answer today. Wati's Growth plan includes three users and sells no fourth; Pro at $149 includes five, then $39 each. respond.io Growth includes ten, then $20 each (Wati pricing, respond.io pricing). A team of six sits on different plans on each side.
  3. Name the number that says it worked. For campaigns, orders from recipients against a group you held back, set up in How to use Wati. For a sales inbox, qualified leads per rep per week. Write last month's figure down before the trial.

Three differences that carry the decision

A price per plan, or a price per message

Wati's subscription is low and its card sits above Meta's on every line for Dutch numbers: $0.2555 against $0.1597 for marketing, $0.0900 against $0.05 for utility, $0.0600 against $0.05 for service (Wati rate card, Meta pricing). respond.io's calculator FAQ says it adds no fee on top of Meta's (pricing calculator). So the cheaper tool flips with your volume, at the crossover worked out above.

Campaigns first, or conversations first

respond.io's $99 Starter plan has no broadcasts, no workflows and no AI agents; all three start on Growth (respond.io pricing). Wati puts broadcasts, chatbots and click-to-WhatsApp ads on its entry plan and charges an automation trigger each time a chatbot or keyword rule runs, 1,000 a month on Growth (Wati pricing). One is shaped around sending, the other around answering.

The size of the team

Ten seats on respond.io Growth against three on Wati Growth decides more teams than any feature. A sales floor of seven that wants Wati pays Pro at $149 plus two seats at $39, so $227 a month before messages (Wati pricing).

One AI step: a template checked before Meta sees it

Wati's AI Template Generator works inside the template form. Write the body, choose the category and language, then click Enhance with AI: it checks the draft against Meta's quality guidelines and Wati's library of well-performing templates, and offers a rewrite. You accept it, fix the issues yourself, or discard it, and only then save and submit to WhatsApp for approval. Each use costs one AI credit, and Growth includes 250 a month (AI credits article). The feature is in beta, for English, Portuguese and Spanish templates.

The human check is the category and the claim. A person decides whether the message is marketing or utility, because Meta's rules decide that, not the rewrite, and reads every promise in the new copy against the offer that is live. The DM agent use case sets out the template rules.

The free check before any trial

Price last quarter on paper. Export your send log, or estimate it by category and country, and multiply each line by Wati's rate card and by Meta's card, then add each plan with the seats you need. Ten minutes in a spreadsheet will tell you which side of 1,357 messages you are on, and both trials are seven days, too short to learn it from the invoice.

Look at what the pricing page sets before you click buy. Wati's page opens on the annual toggle, where Growth reads $59, and its free dedicated onboarding comes only with an annual subscription (Wati pricing), so the help that gets a new team live is packaged with a twelve-month commitment made before the first broadcast has gone out.

Choose respond.io if your job is

  • Qualifying and routing leads across a team of five to ten, with HubSpot in sync.
  • Sending enough marketing templates that Meta's rate, with nothing added, beats a lower plan price.
  • Letting an AI agent hold first conversations and hand them to reps.

Choose Wati if your job is

  • Sending campaigns and order updates to an opted-in list with a team of three.
  • Running click-to-WhatsApp ads into chatbots from the entry plan.
  • Keeping a small monthly fee while volumes stay under the crossover.

FAQ

Does respond.io add a fee to each WhatsApp message?

No. Its calculator FAQ says respond.io does not charge additional fees for messages on top of Meta's own, so you pay Meta's rate by category and country (pricing calculator).

Can I add a fourth user on Wati Growth?

No. Growth lists three users included and no additional users; Pro includes five and sells extra seats at $39 a month each (Wati pricing).

Are chats from click-to-WhatsApp ads free on both?

Wati's rate card says a conversation that starts from a click-to-WhatsApp ad is free (rate card). respond.io's calculator says such ads open a free window of up to 7 days if you reply within 24 hours (pricing calculator), which matches Meta's own page (Meta pricing).
