Shopify vs Etsy: Buyers You Bring or Buyers Who Search

The short answer: if most of your buyers find you by searching Etsy, Shopify does not replace that. It charges $39 a month on Basic with monthly billing plus 2.9% + 30¢ per online card payment, leaves the traffic to you, and its Marketplace Connect app cannot make new Etsy connections, so running both means keeping two catalogues by hand (checked on 26 October 2026 on the Shopify pricing page and the Marketplace Connect help page). Etsy's fees page could not be read that day; its latest quarterly report lists listing fees, transaction fees that include offsite advertising, and payment processing fees. Choose Etsy if your job is being found by buyers already searching a marketplace. Choose Shopify if your job is selling to buyers you bring yourself, and selling to them again.

Disclosure: I may earn a commission through some links on this site. It does not change what this page says.

Etsy is a marketplace: in its own words it connects independent sellers and artisans with consumers looking for items that reflect their tastes, and it earns mostly from fees on that marketplace activity, per its quarterly report for the period to 30 June 2026. Shopify is the opposite arrangement. You rent the shop, the checkout and the tools, and every visitor is one you sent, unless Shopify's own channels send them: its Shop app, social and marketplace integrations and AI chats, per its homepage. On Etsy the street comes with the stall. On Shopify you build the stall and find the street.

Before you open a second shop:

  1. Your effective rate on each. Etsy's own fee figures are on its fees and payments policy, which blocked automated reading on 26 October 2026, so take the rate from your Etsy statements instead: all fees divided by all sales, last quarter. For example, on Shopify Basic, $3,000 a month in 100 orders through Shopify Payments costs 0.029 x $3,000 + 100 x $0.30 = $117 in card fees plus $39 for the plan, $156 in all, or 5.2% of sales, using the pricing page. Then add what you would spend to bring those buyers.
  2. The buyers you can already reach. An email list, an Instagram following, customers who have bought twice. Those are what a store of your own runs on, and they are the only traffic Shopify does not charge you to find.
  3. The share to watch. Once a store is live, track each week the orders that came from your own channels as a share of all orders, across both shops. If it does not grow in 12 weeks, the store is a second checkout, not a second business.

Where each fee sits

Shopify figures read on 26 October 2026 on the pricing page. Etsy's fee types come from its quarterly report; the amounts sit on its fees page, which could not be read that day.

Three things that decide it

Who brings the buyer

A marketplace sells you a place in a search that buyers already run. A store sells you a checkout and expects you to send the buyer. If your Etsy orders come mostly from Etsy search, a Shopify store starts at zero visitors, whatever its theme looks like.

Who keeps the second order

Shopify puts customer segments, email campaigns, marketing automations and abandoned checkout recovery in every plan, with unlimited contacts (pricing page). That is the business case for a store of your own: the second and third order from a buyer you already found, sent by your own email rather than a marketplace search.

Running both without double work

Shopify's Marketplace Connect app syncs listings, orders and inventory with Amazon, eBay, Walmart and Target Plus, but says new connections to Etsy cannot be made at this time; sellers already connected can keep using it. Without that sync, stock sold in one shop has to be taken off the other by hand, which is where overselling starts.

Repeat buyers tagged by an agent, checked by a person

Shopify's assistant can build the automation that this whole comparison rests on. Sidekick builds Shopify Flow workflows and presents each change for review before applying it, and Shopify Flow is a free app on Basic and above.

  1. Install Flow. Staff need Flow permissions to turn a workflow on, so decide who holds them.
  2. Ask Sidekick for a workflow that tags a customer as a repeat buyer when they place a second order, and adds a note with the first order's product.
  3. The human check: a person opens the draft in Flow, reads the trigger, the condition and the action, places a test order as an existing customer, and only then turns it on.
  4. Each month, count tagged customers. That number is the answer to whether the store is building something Etsy could not.

The free test

Your Etsy statements cost nothing and give you the rate from point 1. Shopify gives three days free and then $1 a month for three months, per its pricing page, and its Digital Products app is free if you sell patterns or printables.

Use those $1 months as a deadline, not a discount. They are priced so that an Etsy seller copies photos, descriptions and prices into Shopify while the cost is negligible; the $39 starts in month four, when the work of setting up is already sunk and leaving feels like waste. Decide before then, on the share from point 3, whether your own channels sent enough orders to pay for the shop.

Stay on Etsy when

  • Most orders arrive through Etsy search, and you have no list or following yet.
  • You make to order in small batches and do not want to run marketing.
  • Your effective Etsy rate is below what a store plus your own traffic would cost.

Add or move to Shopify when

  • A steady share of buyers comes from your own email, social or repeat customers.
  • You want the customer list, segments and follow-up emails in your hands.
  • You sell in person as well, at 2.6% + 10¢ a tap on Basic, per the pricing page.

The Shopify entry covers its plans and fees, and how to use Shopify sets up the abandoned checkout email. Etsy has no entry on this site.

FAQ

Can Shopify sync my Etsy listings?

Not as a new connection. The Marketplace Connect help page says new connections to Etsy cannot be made at this time; sellers already connected can continue.

What does Etsy charge per sale?

Its listing, transaction and payment processing fees are set out on its fees and payments policy, which could not be read on 26 October 2026. Your own statement shows what you paid; use that.

Is a Shopify store cheaper than Etsy?

Only at your numbers. For example, the $3,000 month above costs 5.2% of sales on Shopify Basic before any traffic is bought; compare that, plus your marketing spend, with the rate on your Etsy statement.
