Similarweb vs Ahrefs: All Traffic or Google Search Traffic

The short answer: if the question is how much of a rival's whole website traffic arrives and through which channels, Similarweb answers it, from $125 a month billed annually or $199 month to month for one user and 3 months of history (Similarweb pricing, checked on 26 October 2026). If it is how many Google clicks a rival earns and which keywords and links win them, Ahrefs answers it, from $129 a month on Lite with 6 months of history and its own crawler behind the data (Ahrefs pricing). Both figures about a rival are estimates built from different material, so expect them to disagree and pick the one whose material matches your question.

The two tools reach the same chart, a competitor's traffic over time, by different roads. Similarweb models visits across every channel from a blend of sources. Ahrefs works up from search rankings and adds up the clicks. One is a market view; the other is a search engine's view of the same market.
Sort the question first:
- What a year of each entry tier costs. For example, Similarweb's Competitive Intelligence package on monthly billing is 12 x $199 = $2,388 for one user, and Ahrefs Lite is 12 x $129 = $1,548, plus 2 x $40 = $80 a month if two colleagues join, from the Similarweb and Ahrefs pricing pages.
- Calibrate on the site you already measure. Set Similarweb's monthly visits for your domain beside GA4 sessions for the same month, and Ahrefs' organic traffic beside Search Console's Google clicks. Ahrefs' help article says its figure estimates clicks from Google and that GA4 shows total traffic, so comparing Ahrefs with GA4 makes it look wrong when it is answering a narrower question.
- Write both ratios down and check them next month. If the gap on your own site holds steady, the trend lines for rivals are usable even where the levels are off. If it swings, read rivals' figures as direction only.
What each number is made of
| Similarweb | Ahrefs | |
|---|---|---|
| What the traffic figure counts | Visits to a site from every channel, with engagement, demographics and a channels overview | Estimated clicks from Google organic search, for a site, folder or URL |
| How it is built | Shared site analytics, a contributor network of its own consumer products, partners such as ISPs, and public data, calibrated by machine learning | Each ranking keyword's search volume times an estimated click-through rate for its position, summed |
| How often it moves | Not stated for self-serve packages | Positions refresh every few days to every one or two months, more often for popular keywords |
| Small sites | Shows "Not enough data" rather than a weak estimate | Not stated |
| Keywords and backlinks | From the $399 package | Core of every plan, from its own crawler |
| History at the entry price | 3 months | 6 months on Lite |
| Agent access | MCP and API in business packages, through sales | MCP and API from Lite |
| Free view | Free site data, which it calls a high-level sample | A free organic traffic checker for any site; Ahrefs Free for sites you verify |

The differences that decide it
What the number counts
A rival growing through partnerships, email, social or AI assistants can show that growth in Similarweb's channel view and not in Ahrefs, because Ahrefs only counts what it can derive from Google rankings. A rival climbing in search can show it in both, and Ahrefs will say which pages and keywords did it. Ahrefs' own article calls its figure an estimate that works well for comparison rather than for exact counts. Similarweb's methodology page describes its output the same way, as modelled estimates.
Channels, or keywords and links
Similarweb's entry package is about the market: traffic and engagement, customer demographics, a marketing channels overview and competitor alerts. Keyword research, rank tracking, site audit and backlinks join only in the $399 package. Ahrefs starts from the other end: Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, a rank tracker with 750 keywords and a site audit are all in Lite. If the next action is a content or link plan, Ahrefs holds the raw material; if it is a budget split across channels, Similarweb does.
Who the price is built for
Similarweb's self-serve packages are one user each, and its trial bills the card after 7 days unless cancelled (trial article). Ahrefs includes one user on Lite and allows two more, and offers no trial and no discounts (Ahrefs pricing). History is the quieter difference: 2 years on Ahrefs Standard against 6 months on Similarweb's top self-serve package.
Prices by budget
| Monthly budget | Similarweb: month to month (billed annually) | Ahrefs: monthly billing |
|---|---|---|
| Under $50 | Free site data only | Starter: $29 |
| $125 to $200 | Competitive Intelligence: $199 ($125), 3 months of history | Lite: $129, 6 months |
| $250 to $400 | Competitive Intel & SEO & AEO: $399 ($333), 6 months | Standard: $249, 2 years |
| $450 to $650 | Competitive Intel, SEO & AEO & Ads: $649 ($542), 6 months | Advanced: $449, 5 years |
| Custom | Business packages, up to 37 months | Enterprise: $1,499 a month, annual commitment |
USD, checked on 26 October 2026 on the Similarweb and Ahrefs pricing pages. Ahrefs says annual billing saves up to 17%; its extra users cost $40, $60 or $80 a month on Lite, Standard and Advanced.
One agent step that uses both views
Ahrefs' MCP server, on Lite and above, brings its data into Claude or ChatGPT, and its MCP page lists finding regional markets where competitors already succeed among the uses. Ask the assistant for each of four rivals' organic search traffic by country and a shortlist of the three countries where they grew most. A person then opens Similarweb, sets the same rivals and month, and checks total visits and the channel mix in those countries before any market goes into a plan, because a market where a rival grows through paid or direct traffic is not an SEO opportunity. Similarweb has an MCP server too, which its pricing page places with the business packages.
Choose Similarweb if
- Your job is sizing a market or a rival's whole digital presence: channels, audience and share of visits.
- Growth in your category comes from direct, social, referral or AI traffic as much as from Google.
- One analyst uses it, and three to six months of history answer the question.
Choose Ahrefs if
- Your job is search: which keywords and links send a rival its Google traffic, and how to win them.
- Several people need the data, and you want months or years of history at the entry tiers.
- You want MCP access without a sales conversation.
The free calibration, then one paid tool
Both free views are enough for step two of the list: Similarweb's free site data and Ahrefs' free traffic checker on your own domain, set against GA4 and Search Console. Ahrefs also offers Web Analytics free for verified sites up to 1 million events per project a month, a measured view of your own traffic with no cookies. Related: Similarweb vs Semrush and Semrush vs Ahrefs.
Ahrefs' FAQ says users who are not prepaid for are charged automatically on a pay-as-you-go basis, so inviting a colleague into Lite adds $40 a month without a separate purchase step (Ahrefs pricing). Decide who needs a seat before the first invitation goes out.
FAQ
Why does Ahrefs show less traffic than Similarweb for the same site?
They count different things. Ahrefs estimates clicks from Google organic search, built from rankings, search volume and click-through rates; Similarweb estimates all visits from every channel. A site with strong direct or social traffic will always look smaller in Ahrefs.
Does either offer a free trial?
Similarweb offers a 7-day trial that bills the card unless you cancel before it ends. Ahrefs offers no trial; its pricing FAQ points website owners to Ahrefs Free, which gives limited access to Site Explorer and Site Audit for sites you verify.
Can I measure my own site with either?
Ahrefs Web Analytics is free for verified sites within its event limit. Similarweb shows your measured figures only if you connect Google Analytics; otherwise it estimates your site like any other.
