The short answer: if your listening is a dozen published business books a year, Audible is the shorter route: Premium is $14.95 a month after a 30-day trial, with one credit a month for a title you keep, and Standard is $8.99 a month for one audiobook a month that you hear while subscribed (Audible plans, US store, checked on 26 October 2026). If it is your own reading, analyst PDFs, board packs, saved articles and ebooks you already own, Speechify reads them aloud: Premium is $29 a month or $139 a year, up to 5x speed, with AI summaries (Speechify pricing). One sells recordings of books; the other turns any text you have into audio.

Disclosure: I may earn a commission through some links on this site. It does not change what this page says.

Before you subscribe to either:

  1. Price your actual list for a year. For example, twelve books on Audible Premium is 12 x $14.95 = $179.40, or $99 on the limited one-year Premium offer showing on 26 October 2026; Standard's twelve monthly picks are 12 x $8.99 = $107.88, but those titles lock again if you leave (Audible plans). Speechify Premium for a year is $139 and reads as many documents as you load (Speechify pricing).
  2. Look at the shelf you already own. Kindle books bought from Amazon can be imported into Speechify's iOS app through read.amazon.com (Kindle article), so an ebook library is already an audio library in a synthetic voice. Titles you have bought on Audible stay yours after you cancel.
  3. Count finished, not started. Books and reports you finished last quarter, against the quarter after you switch. Listening hours flatter every app.

Read on 26 October 2026 from the Audible plans page and its FAQ, and the Speechify pricing page. Audible runs separate country stores with their own prices; these are from the US store.

Where the choice turns

Recorded books, or anything with words

Audible's Premium credit buys any audiobook regardless of length or list price, and the Plus Catalog adds thousands of titles to stream or download while you remain a member (Audible plans FAQ). That is the right shape for books someone has already recorded. Speechify's shape is the opposite: it reads the competitor teardown nobody will ever narrate, the 40-page agency proposal, the draft of your own landing page (Speechify pricing). My view: for a marketing lead, the second pile is usually the taller one.

Owning, or renting

Audible splits its two plans on ownership. Premium titles bought with a credit are yours after you cancel; Standard picks and Plus Catalog titles show a lock until you rejoin (Audible plans FAQ). Speechify owns nothing on your behalf: the files are yours, and the subscription buys the voices, speed and AI features.

Listening to learn, or listening to work

Speechify adds work tools around the audio: AI summaries and chat, voice typing and Google Drive, Dropbox and OneDrive imports on Premium (Speechify pricing). Its terms license the reader for personal, non-commercial use (terms), which suits reading for your own job and rules out publishing what it reads.

One AI step: a summary you check before you quote it

In Speechify's iOS app, open a document from your library, tap AI Chat and choose Summarize Text; set length, paragraph or bullet points, and the pages to cover, then ask follow-up questions in Ask Anything (AI Chat article). Use it on the chapter or report you are about to cite in a deck. The human check: every figure and claim from the summary is found on its page in the source before it goes on a slide, and anything the summary states that the page does not is struck out. Audible's plans page lists no AI tools to compare it with.

Choose Speechify if your job is

  • Getting through PDFs, reports, proposals and web pages that will never be audiobooks.
  • Turning ebooks you already own into audio, at the speed you choose.
  • Summarising and questioning a document before you spend an hour on it.

Choose Audible if your job is

  • Working through published business books in their recorded editions.
  • Building a library of titles you keep after you cancel.
  • Listening on a lower monthly budget, where one book a month is enough.

Speechify has an entry on this site; Audible does not, so its plans page is the reference.

Free before paid

Start with what costs nothing: load the reports already on your laptop into Speechify's free plan, which reads at up to 1.5x with 10 voices (Speechify pricing), for two weeks. Take Audible's 30-day trial only when a specific book is next on your list, and diarise day 28, because the trial renews at $8.99 or $14.95 a month (Audible plans).

Audible's Premium credits expire 12 months after they are issued, or the day the membership is cancelled, so every unspent credit in your account is a reason to keep paying, and the month you cancel with three of them unused is the month you lose them (Audible plans FAQ). Spend credits as they arrive, or step down to Standard.

FAQ

Can Speechify read my Audible books?

Not that its help centre documents. It lists what it can read, web pages, documents, PDFs, ePubs, research papers and books from read.amazon.com, and Audible files are not on that list (what Speechify reads).

What happens to Audible books if I cancel?

Titles bought with cash or credits stay in your library; Plus Catalog titles and Standard selections lock until you rejoin (Audible plans FAQ).

Is Speechify cheaper than Audible?

Per month, no: Premium is $29 against Audible's $8.99 and $14.95. Per year, Speechify's $139 sits between Audible Premium's $179.40 at the monthly rate and its $99 one-year offer (Speechify pricing, Audible plans). They buy different things, so price the list you have.
