The short answer: if you want a reader for your own PDFs and documents at the lowest price, NaturalReader's Plus plan is $20.90 a month or $119 a year, against Speechify Premium at $29 a month or $139 a year (NaturalReader pricing, Speechify pricing, both checked on 26 October 2026). Speechify earns its higher price if speed and reach matter: up to 5x playback, Google Drive, Dropbox and OneDrive imports, AI summaries and an agent product for memos. Either way, the personal plans are for your ears only; publishing or sharing the audio needs Speechify Studio or NaturalReader Commercial.

Three questions first:

  1. What does a year cost at your billing rhythm? For example, monthly billing for twelve months is 12 x $20.90 = $250.80 on NaturalReader Plus and 12 x $29 = $348 on Speechify Premium; yearly it is $119 against $139, a $20 gap (NaturalReader pricing, Speechify pricing). If you would cancel within four months, monthly billing is the cheaper commitment on both.
  2. Where do your documents sit, and how sensitive are they? Speechify can encrypt a file on your device before upload, though AI features and sharing switch off for it and the text needed for playback still goes to its voice servers when you use a cloud voice (encryption article). NaturalReader states that your documents are used only to generate audio and never to train AI models (NaturalReader). Files under NDA belong in whichever arrangement your legal team signs off.
  3. What will count as working? The number of documents you finish each week by ear, measured for two weeks before you pay and two weeks after.

What decides it

The licence, stated plainly on both sides

NaturalReader's FAQ is blunt: audio made on the personal plans is for the purchaser's private listening and may not be used on websites, in YouTube videos or passed to anyone else (NaturalReader FAQ). Speechify's terms say the same in legal form, licensing the reader for personal, non-commercial use and reserving commercial use for its Voice Over Studio (Speechify terms, sections 4.1 and 4.4). So the MP3 of a report you send to your team is outside both personal licences. Price the commercial tier if that is the plan.

Commercial tiers that work differently

NaturalReader Commercial is a monthly product, $29 for 500,000 credits on Starter or $49 for 2 million on Creator, with voice models from Gemini, OpenAI, Azure and ElevenLabs, prompt control over delivery and voice cloning, and no refunds (Commercial page). Speechify Studio is sold by the year, $100 for 86,400 credits at 1 credit a second of voiceover (Studio pricing). One fits a single project this month; the other fits a year of steady voiceovers.

Speed and reach, or price

Speechify's Premium plays at up to 5x, scans printed pages, connects three cloud drives and adds voice typing (pricing). NaturalReader covers OCR, MP3 downloads, a pronunciation editor and an AI text filter that strips menus, footers and ads (NaturalReader). If you listen fast and on several devices, Speechify's extra $20 a year buys something. If you listen at normal speed at a desk, it buys little.

One agent step: proposals turned into a terms table

Speechify Work is Speechify's agent product: you delegate a task and its agents research, analyse several documents and write memos, metered in credits on a plan called Speechify Max with 2,500 a month that do not roll over (Speechify Work). Give it three agency proposals and ask for one table: monthly fee, what is included, notice period and renewal terms. A task's cost shows only after it runs (Work FAQ), and Max's price was not on the pricing page on 26 October 2026, so ask before you rely on it. The human check: whoever signs the contract opens each proposal and confirms every cell against its page before the table reaches a meeting. Encrypted files cannot go into AI features, so keep confidential drafts out of this step. The NaturalReader pages read for this comparison list no agent feature.

Choose Speechify if your job is

  • Listening fast, across phone, laptop and browser, with your cloud drives connected.
  • Summarising, questioning and dictating around what you read.
  • Handing multi-document analysis to an agent, with a person checking the output.

Choose NaturalReader if your job is

  • A capable personal reader at the lower yearly and monthly price.
  • Clear privacy terms on your documents and AI training.
  • Occasional commercial voiceovers bought one month at a time, with premium voice models included.

Speechify's plans and stores are in its entry; NaturalReader has no entry here, so start at naturalreaders.com.

A week on the free plans

Both free tiers do real work. NaturalReader's gives unlimited listening with its free voices and five minutes a day of the better ones; Speechify's plays at up to 1.5x with ten voices (NaturalReader, Speechify pricing). Load this week's three longest documents into both and listen on the commute. If neither free voice is tolerable, NaturalReader's Plus is the cheaper upgrade to test first.

NaturalReader's pricing section opens on yearly billing, so the $9.92 a month a visitor sees first is $119 collected on day one, with a refund window of 7 days, against $20.90 billed month by month and cancellable (NaturalReader). The yearly figure is the right one only after the free week has shown you will still be listening in March.

FAQ

Can I share NaturalReader MP3 files with colleagues?

Not from a personal plan: its FAQ limits that audio to the purchaser's private listening and points to NaturalReader Commercial for any business or public use (NaturalReader FAQ).

Is NaturalReader Pro worth the extra over Plus?

Pro adds Pro HD voices built on Gemini and ChatGPT models, with tone and emotion control by prompt, for $25.90 a month or $159 a year (NaturalReader). My view: Plus is enough for reports and proofreading; Pro's voices matter once you listen to whole books.

What happens if I forget to cancel a Speechify trial?

It renews into Premium unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the trial ends, and you cancel in the store you subscribed through (cancellation article).
