Vista Social vs Hootsuite: Turning Comments Into DMs

The short answer: you are not misreading Vista Social's pricing page: the Professional card lists 2 users and the FAQ further down says 3. Either way, comment-to-DM automation is on that $80 a month plan on monthly billing, while Hootsuite puts its keyword-triggered DM automations on Professional at $199 per user a month billed annually (checked on 26 October 2026 on the Vista Social and Hootsuite pricing pages). For a two-person team whose leads start in Instagram comments, Vista Social is the cheaper and deeper tool; Hootsuite's seat price pays off when the same people also run care, listening and ads.

Disclosure: I may earn a commission through some links on this site. It does not change what this page says.

The job here is narrow and common: someone comments a word under a post, gets a direct message with a link or a question, and becomes a lead. Both tools do it. They differ in how the trigger is recognised, what the message can collect, and what else you pay for around it.

Settle three things on paper:

  1. The bill for the people who will run it. For example, two people on Hootsuite Professional cost 2 x $199 = $398 a month on annual billing; Vista Social Professional is $80 a month for the account, and Advanced, where AI intent triggers and data collection start, is $160. If you also post to X, Vista adds $29 a month for it, so Advanced with X is $160 + $29 = $189 (Vista Social pricing, Hootsuite plans).
  2. The posts and offer you already have. Pull last quarter's five most-commented Instagram posts, the offer you would send (a guide, a code, a booking link) and the page it lands on. The automation only scales what already gets comments.
  3. A holdout to prove it. Alternate similar posts with and without the automation for a month, and compare link clicks and sign-ups per post. Without the posts that ran untouched, a rise in leads has no baseline.

What decides it

Recognising the comment, and keeping the answer

Hootsuite's DM automation guide runs a short wizard: pick a scheduled Instagram post, set one keyword, write a rotating set of public replies with an optional delay, then the DM with a button and a URL. One flow per post. Vista Social adds two things on Advanced. Its intent detection triggers on what a message means rather than its exact words, so, for example, two differently worded questions about price can start the same flow. Its data collection step asks for an email or phone number, validates the format, retries on a bad answer, and can update the contact in a connected CRM. If the goal is a list of qualified contacts, not just clicks, that second step is the difference.

What the rest of the plan carries

Vista Social's Professional plan includes 15 profiles, an inbox, review responses, reports, its link in bio page and an MCP connection; X, broader listening at $75 a month and employee advocacy at $199 a month for 25 employees are add-ons (Vista Social pricing). Hootsuite's Professional seat includes unlimited accounts, X, 30 days of listening, trend forecasts and ad management for Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and X (Hootsuite plans). A brand that lives on Instagram buys less with Hootsuite's seat. A brand where the same team watches the market and runs ads uses most of it.

One AI step, and who checks it

Set up an intent such as Vista Social's own example, "Looking for pricing for (X) product/service", and point it at a DM that sends the pricing page. The model decides which comments and messages match; a person writes the DM text, reads the first day's matches in the inbox, and removes the intent if it catches the wrong messages. Vista's support pages list intent detection on Advanced, Scale and Enterprise, and its Ask Vista agents on the same plans include an hourly monitor for inbox items left unanswered past your response-time target.

An email in a DM is personal data

Collecting an email or phone number through a DM is collecting personal data, so the GDPR applies to it the way it applies to a web form. Article 13 lists what people must be told when their data is collected from them, including who is collecting it and why. Put one plain line in the DM before the question, link your privacy notice, and keep the purpose to what you said.

The prices

Vista Social, checked on 26 October 2026 on its pricing page: Professional $80 a month or $950 a year, 15 profiles; Advanced $160 a month or $1,910 a year, 30 profiles; Scale $360 a month or $4,310 a year, 70 profiles. Yearly billing is paid upfront for the term and saves 20%.

Hootsuite, on its plans page the same day, per user a month on annual billing: Standard $99 without DM automations, Professional $199 with them, Advanced $399. Its trial runs 14 days without a card, as does Vista's.

Choose Vista Social if

  • Your job is turning Instagram comments into captured contacts, with the email or phone number landing in a CRM field.
  • You want AI to match comments by meaning rather than an exact keyword.
  • Your team is small and your channels are mostly Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn.

Choose Hootsuite if

  • Your job is a full social operation where DM automation is one tool among care, listening and ads.
  • X is part of every campaign and you want it included rather than added.
  • A keyword and a link are enough for the offers you run.

Test the keyword by hand first

The free test needs no tool. On your next post, ask people to comment one word and answer each one yourself with a tracked link. If few people comment, an automation will not change that; if many do, you have the evidence for either plan. Then use a 14-day trial for the build.

Vista Social's intent detection, the part that makes its automation smarter than a keyword match, starts on Advanced at $160 a month, twice the Professional price, per its support article and pricing page. Run the keyword version on Professional first and upgrade only if the misses show up in the inbox.

FAQ

Does Hootsuite's DM automation work on boosted posts?

No. Its guide says the automation only detects comments on the organic version of an Instagram post or reel, not on a boosted or promoted version.

How many users come with Vista Social Professional?

The plan card and comparison table say 2; the FAQ on the same page says 3. Ask Vista Social to confirm in writing before you rely on the third seat.

Can Vista Social publish to X?

Yes, as an add-on at $29 a month that covers publishing, boosting, automations and analytics for X, per the pricing page.
