Hootsuite vs HubSpot: A Social Suite or Social in the CRM

The short answer: if your company already pays for HubSpot Marketing Hub Professional, its social tool is in the bill: up to 50 connected accounts, 10,000 posts a month, and comments you match to a contact land on that contact's timeline, per the HubSpot pricing page and its contact matching guide, checked on 26 October 2026. Buy Hootsuite on top only when social is also a customer care desk or a listening job, from $99 per user a month billed annually (Hootsuite plans). If you are not on HubSpot yet, do not buy a CRM platform to schedule posts.

Disclosure: I may earn a commission through some links on this site. It does not change what this page says.

These two are not rival answers to one question. HubSpot is a CRM with marketing, sales and service hubs, and social publishing is one tool inside the marketing hub. Hootsuite is a social operation sold per seat: a planner, a care inbox, listening and an AI layer, with a directory of apps, HubSpot among them, that connect it to the rest of the company.

Map the path before you price it:

  1. Price the first year, not the month. HubSpot charges a required one-time Professional onboarding of $3,000 on top of the plan. For example, on the monthly-payment option at $890, the first year is 12 x $890 + $3,000 = $13,680, which includes 3 core seats (HubSpot pricing). Two Hootsuite Standard seats for a year are 2 x $99 x 12 = $2,376 on annual billing (Hootsuite plans).
  2. Start from the CRM you have. On HubSpot's free or Starter tiers there is no social tool; the connection guide lists it for Marketing Hub Professional and Enterprise. If you are already on Professional, connect your accounts before buying anything else.
  3. Decide what "worked" means. HubSpot sets a contact's original source drill-down to SOCIAL when you associate them from a social interaction (contact matching guide). Count those contacts, and the deals they open, for one quarter. That is the number a social tool has to move.

Where the decision sits

Who owns the record

HubSpot's case is that the social interaction and the customer are the same row. Match a commenter to a contact, and their Instagram or Facebook comments, or their retweets and quote tweets on X, appear on the activity timeline and can filter segments (contact matching guide). Hootsuite keeps its own contact profiles and reaches the CRM through apps. Its directory lists a HubSpot app built by a partner that creates and edits HubSpot contacts and tickets from X and Facebook streams (HubSpot app by Praecipio). That works, and it is one more connection to maintain.

What kind of social work you run

HubSpot's social tool is a publishing and attribution tool. Its direct message support covers Instagram only, keeps the 200 most recent messages per thread, and leaves the mobile app out (DM guide). Hootsuite's inbox handles public and private conversations on every plan, masks personal data, and on higher tiers routes conversations by skill and sends satisfaction surveys (Hootsuite plans). A team that answers customers in public all day needs the second. A team that publishes a calendar and wants to know which posts brought in leads needs the first.

One question an agent can answer before you reply

Hootsuite's directory also lists a HubSpot app built by Hootsuite itself: give Wisdom, its AI assistant, access to HubSpot, and it finds records, checks where a deal stands and summarizes the pipeline inside the conversation (HubSpot app for Wisdom). The useful step: before anyone answers a sharp comment from a named account, ask Wisdom whether that company has an open deal and at which stage. The agent fetches; the person writes the reply, knowing whether a salesperson should see it first. On the HubSpot side, its LinkedIn post generator saves every AI post as a draft, and users with Draft only permissions can create posts but cannot publish them.

Choose Hootsuite if

  • Your job is social customer care or listening: many conversations a day, routed to the right person, with personal data masked.
  • You publish to Pinterest, which HubSpot's connection guide does not list.
  • Your CRM is not HubSpot, or you only need occasional look-ups into it.

Choose HubSpot if

  • Your job is turning social posts into tracked contacts and deals in the CRM you already run.
  • You already pay for Marketing Hub Professional, so the social tool adds no licence.
  • Reddit is a channel you publish to.

Before any purchase

The free route is real on both sides of this pair, in different ways. If you hold HubSpot Professional, the social tool costs nothing extra: connect the accounts, run one month of posts from it, and see whether the contact timelines fill up. If you do not, Hootsuite's 14-day trial needs no card, and its pricing FAQ says you are not charged when it ends.

HubSpot charges the $3,000 Professional onboarding automatically at purchase, per the note and FAQ on its pricing page, so the vendor is paid for setup before your first scheduled post exists. Weigh that one-off against what the social tool replaces, not against Hootsuite's monthly seat.

When the real question is which of three overlapping tools should own the lead record, social, CRM or a spreadsheet in between, that is a stack decision rather than a tool decision, and the Startup Fixer, a one-week review I sell, is built for it.

FAQ

Is HubSpot's social tool on the Starter plan?

No. The connection guide lists it for Marketing Hub Professional and Enterprise, and the pricing page puts social media in the Professional column.

Can Hootsuite create contacts in HubSpot?

Its app directory lists a partner-built HubSpot app that creates and edits contacts and tickets from X and Facebook streams, and a Hootsuite-built app that lets Wisdom read HubSpot records. Both are listed as free.

Does HubSpot answer Facebook messages?

Its direct message guide covers Instagram messages only. Facebook comments are among the social interactions the contact matching guide can attach to a contact.
