Smart Traffic picks which variant each visitor sees. The ad that visitor clicked is not on its list of inputs. So keep Unbounce if it builds and tests your landing pages. Add AdAlign when the open question is whether each live ad still matches the page it sends people to. At up to €75,000 of monthly Meta and Google spend, that is AdAlign's Growth band, from €590 a month on an annual contract (pricing, checked on 27 October 2026). Start with one ad in the free audit. Unbounce's own job is the page. A/B tests start on Experiment at $149 a month, and Smart Traffic, its AI routing between variants, on Optimize at $249, both on monthly billing, per its pricing page.
Disclosure: I earn a commission if you buy AdAlign through a link on this page, and this page recommends it. Every claim about AdAlign links to AdAlign's own pages.
This is rarely an either-or. Unbounce decides which version of a page a visitor sees. AdAlign decides whether the page agrees with the ad that sent them (how it works). Neither tool gives the other's answer.
Rule of thumb before you add anything:
- Know the traffic bill first. Over the plan's allowance, Unbounce keeps the page running and charges $80 for each 10,000 extra visitors, rounded up, at the end of the cycle, per its limits article. The page keeps running. So does the meter. For example, 41,000 visitors on Build's 20,000 is 21,000 over, which rounds up to three blocks: 3 x $80 = $240. AdAlign's band moves with ad spend, not visitors (pricing).
- Start from the page you already run. Open the Unbounce page with the most paid traffic and note its variants. Then list every ad whose final URL points at it. AdAlign's connected app shows the same list as "ads per page", ranked by spend (home page).
- Know what the lift figure is. Smart Traffic's Lift Percentage compares its conversion rate with an estimate of what random routing would have done (Smart Traffic FAQ). On the ad-to-page side, AdAlign's number is spend at risk on ads scoring below 5 (home page). Note both before you change anything.
What each one looks at
| Unbounce | AdAlign | Source | |
|---|---|---|---|
| The decision it makes | Which variant of an Unbounce page each visitor sees | How well each live ad matches the page it links to, out of 10 | Smart Traffic, How it works |
| What it reads | Visitor attributes such as browser, country or region, time zone, operating system | The ad's image or video, copy and destination URL, the page above the fold, and spend | Smart Traffic FAQ, AdAlign home |
| Words from the ad on the page | Dynamic text replacement from URL parameters, from Experiment | Message Match scores whether headline, offer and CTA are echoed | Unbounce pricing, How it works |
| When you change the page | Smart Traffic returns to its learning phase on republish | The page is re-checked daily and re-scored when it changes | Smart Traffic FAQ, How it works |
| Pages covered | Unbounce pages only | Any public page an ad points to | Smart Traffic FAQ, AdAlign vs Instapage |
| AI assistants | MCP server on every plan: build pages, run tests, pull reports | REST API from Scale for evaluations, history and fixes | Unbounce MCP, AdAlign developers |
Where they differ
Smart Traffic picks a variant; it does not read the ad
Smart Traffic learns from visitor attributes such as browser type, country or region, time zone and operating system. It starts routing after about 50 visits (Smart Traffic FAQ). Nothing in that list is the creative a visitor clicked. If every variant misses what a Meta ad showed, the router still picks the least bad one. That is not a fault in your setup. The router was never shown the ad. AdAlign compares the ad itself with the page, on visual match, message match, the first screen and tone, and names the dimension that pulled the score down (how it works).
Matching the words is half of it
Unbounce's dynamic text replacement swaps page text for values passed in the URL. Typically that is the search keyword, through Google's keyword insertion, per its DTR guide. That fixes the headline for search. But it swaps words, so the image or colourway a social creative showed stays wherever the page left it. AdAlign's default weights put 40% on visual match, and Google Search placements shift weight to message and above-the-fold (how it works).
The same edit, two reactions
Republish a Smart Traffic page or change a variant, and Unbounce sends it back to its learning phase. Each variant added after the start needs another 30 visitors (Smart Traffic FAQ). AdAlign treats the same edit as a reason to re-score. Monitored pages are re-checked daily and flagged Stable, Pending or Drifted, with an email or Slack alert when a score drops under your threshold (how it works). One protects the test. The other protects the ads.
Prices, checked on 27 October 2026
Unbounce's pricing page lists US dollars, monthly billing first and yearly billing per month second. Starter is $29 or $22, for 5 pages and 500 visitors. Build is $99 or $74, for 20,000 visitors. Experiment is $149 or $112, for 30,000 visitors and A/B tests. Optimize is $249 or $187, for 50,000 visitors and Smart Traffic. Concierge and Agency are quoted. The trial lasts 14 days, with no card, one user and no custom domains.
AdAlign, from its pricing page, before VAT: Growth from €590 a month, Scale from €1,290 and Portfolio from €2,490, on annual contracts billed monthly, or 20% more month to month. A 30-day pilot of €1,500 comes first and is credited if you stay.
Smart Traffic costs $100 a month more than Experiment on monthly billing, and the figure that says it earned that is the Lift Percentage. Lift Percentage is a useful number, and it comes with the plan. It is also Unbounce grading its own router, against Unbounce's own statistical model of what random routing would have delivered, per its FAQ. For an independent read, run a plain A/B split on a comparable page alongside it.
Choose AdAlign if your job is
- Knowing which of the ads pointed at your Unbounce pages, and at every other page, no longer match them, with the spend attached (home page).
- Catching, within a day, the variant or republish that breaks a match.
- Giving a client one spend-at-risk figure and a page report their web team can act on (agencies).
Choose Unbounce if your job is
- Building and testing landing pages without a developer, by prompt, template or a blank canvas.
- Routing each visitor to the variant most likely to convert for them, with Smart Traffic.
- Echoing search keywords in the headline with dynamic text replacement, or building pages from Claude or ChatGPT through the MCP server.
My recommendation: keep Unbounce to build and test the page, and add AdAlign to check every ad still matches it. Background is in the Unbounce and AdAlign entries, and how to use Unbounce sets up Smart Traffic.
The free check, and the paid step after it
Take the Unbounce page with the most paid traffic and the ad that spends most into it. Put both into AdAlign's free audit. The overall score arrives in about 60 seconds without an account, and a free account shows all four dimensions and gives 5 audits a month. Repeat with the second-biggest ad. If one scores well and the other does not, the page is fine. One ad needs its own variant.
Scores under 5 across your top ads are the signal for the paid step. AdAlign, which pays me a commission, will then connect an account read-only on a demo call and walk through the spend at risk per page. The pricing page sets out the pilot and bands.
FAQ
Does Smart Traffic know which ad a visitor clicked?
Not from its listed inputs. Its FAQ names browser type, country or region, time zone and operating system, followed by "etc.", and says it works URL by URL. The ad's creative is not among them.
Will AdAlign score each Unbounce variant separately?
Its audit page says it captures the page above the fold at the URL the ad points to and parses the visible text. Its pages do not say how it treats several variants served on one URL. Ask on the demo before you rely on per-variant scores.
Can AdAlign read Unbounce pages on my own domain or WordPress?
Yes. AdAlign scores any public landing page URL, and its Instapage comparison names Unbounce pages among them.
