Later vs Buffer: Social Sets or Per-Channel Pricing

The short answer: if each brand you run posts to four or more of Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Pinterest, LinkedIn, YouTube, Threads and Snapchat, Later prices that as one social set, and two sets with two users cost $50 a month on its Growth plan (Later pricing, checked on 26 October 2026). If you post to two or three channels, need X, Bluesky, Mastodon or Google Business, or post more than 180 times a month per profile, Buffer at $6 or $12 a channel is the simpler fit (Buffer pricing).

Disclosure: I may earn a commission through some links on this site. It does not change what this page says.

Later changes the unit you pay for. Buffer charges for each account you connect. Later charges for a bundle of one account per network, whether you fill it or not, and then limits how many posts each account may schedule in a month. Which one is cheaper depends on how many networks a brand uses and how often it posts.

Rule of thumb:

  1. Count scheduled posts per profile per month, Stories included. Later's post count includes Reels, Stories and carousels and is counted when a post is scheduled, not when it goes out (pricing FAQ). For example, one feed post and two Stories a day on Instagram is 3 x 30 = 90 a month: over Starter's 30, inside Growth's 180.
  2. Start from the networks you already post to. Later's social set holds Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Pinterest, LinkedIn, YouTube, Threads and Snapchat (pricing FAQ). X, Bluesky, Mastodon and Google Business Profiles appear in Buffer's channel table and not in that set (Buffer pricing).
  3. Measure the bio link before and after. Both sell a link page: Later's Link in Bio tracks clicks, Buffer's Start Page counts as a channel. Tag the links with UTM parameters, record a month of sessions from the bio in your analytics, and compare the month after the switch.

The plans, and what each cap means

Later's three plans differ in sets, users, posts and history. Starter is one set, one user and 30 posts per profile a month with three months of analytics. Growth is two sets, two users, 180 posts per profile, a social inbox, and internal and external approvals, with reviewers able to leave feedback without a Later login. Scale is six sets, four users, unlimited posts, Meta ads analytics, competitive benchmarking and two years of data, all per the pricing page. Extra sets cost $15 a month and extra users $5 on monthly billing, and Starter cannot buy either.

Buffer has no post cap to plan around: paid plans schedule without a limit, subject to a fair use ceiling of 5,000 posts per channel (pricing FAQ). The trade is that every account is a line on the bill, and approval needs a reviewer inside Buffer with Full Access, per its approval guide.

Later's homepage leads with influencer marketing: creator matching, campaign services and a creator network. Social media management is one of four product lines. If creator campaigns are part of your year, that is a reason to look at Later beyond the scheduler. If they are not, you are comparing two schedulers.

One agent step, with a person at the end

Buffer documents an MCP server with a tool, get_aggregated_post_metrics, that adds up reactions, comments and, where every channel supports them, reach and impressions across a date range of up to 365 days; metrics refresh once a day (MCP documentation). A weekly step: the assistant calls list_posts with its metrics option for the last 28 days, names the three posts that drew the most comments, and saves three follow-up ideas with create_idea. The docs say an idea does not schedule or publish anything, so a person turns ideas into posts, or bins them; How to Use Buffer to Plan Next Week From Last Month's Posts walks through that routine. Later's documented AI sits inside the app: AI credits for content (5, 50 or 100 a month by plan) and future-trend features that, in the page's words, help you spot trends and auto-draft timely posts (pricing page).

Later's yearly price is 25% off, and its FAQ says annual plans are billed once a year and renew automatically (pricing FAQ). What Later gains from that discount is twelve months of a plan committed before you know whether its post cap fits. Run one month on monthly billing, count what you scheduled, then decide.

Choose Later if

  • Your job is visual content for brands that each run several of Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest, Snapchat and YouTube.
  • Clients or managers should review posts and leave feedback without a login of their own.
  • Influencer or creator campaigns are on the plan and you want them with the same vendor.

Choose Buffer if

  • Your job includes X, Bluesky, Mastodon or Google Business Profiles, or a brand uses only two or three channels.
  • You post often enough that a monthly cap per profile would need watching.
  • You want to start free: three channels, 10 scheduled posts each, at no cost on the Free plan.

FAQ

Does a Story count against Later's post limit?

Yes. Later counts every scheduled post per profile per month, including Reels, Stories and carousels, at the moment it is scheduled (pricing FAQ). On Starter, 30 a month means one item a day per profile.

Can Later publish to X?

Its social set lists Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Pinterest, LinkedIn, YouTube, Threads and Snapchat, and its auto-publish answer names the same eight (pricing FAQ). X is not among them; Buffer lists X free and premium profiles in its channel table.

Which has the free plan?

Buffer, with three channels and 10 scheduled posts per channel (Buffer pricing). Later offers a 14-day trial on its paid plans (Later pricing).
