The short answer: two people sending 40 contracts a month pay SignWell $20 a month on Light, $10 per sender billed annually, with no document cap; on Docusign Standard the same two pay $50 a month on annual upfront billing for 200 envelopes a year, against the 480 they need, and the rest are billed pay-as-you-go at a rate the plan page does not print. Both were checked on 26 October 2026 on the SignWell pricing page and Docusign's eSignature plans. Choose SignWell for volume from a few senders. Choose Docusign when an EU contract must carry an advanced or qualified electronic signature, which it sells as a registered qualified trust service provider.

Warning signs to rule out first:

  1. The envelope gap. For example, 40 contracts a month is 40 x 12 = 480 a year; two Docusign Standard users get 2 x 100 = 200 envelopes a year on annual plans, so 480 - 200 = 280 are billed as extras, per Docusign's plans page checked on 26 October 2026. SignWell's paid plans include unlimited documents, per its pricing page.
  2. The templates you already have. If your contracts sit in Docusign now, SignWell's plan table lists "Easy DocuSign import" on every plan, including the free one. Move your two busiest templates first and send one real contract from each.
  3. Last year's real volume. Count completed agreements per sender per month. An envelope counts once it is sent, signed or not, per the FAQ on Docusign's plans page, so count voided ones too.

Docusign changes what you are counted on. SignWell prices the people who send and leaves documents unlimited on paid plans. Docusign prices users, then rations envelopes per user, and adds a choice of three billing types with different commitments.

What 12 months costs at four volumes

Contracts a month, two sendersSignWell Light, billed annuallyDocusign Standard, annual billed upfront
10$20 a month, no cap$50 a month; 120 a year fits inside 200
16$20 a month$50 a month; 192 a year, just inside
40$20 a month$50 a month for 200 envelopes; 280 more pay-as-you-go
100$20 a month$50 a month for 200 envelopes; 1,000 more pay-as-you-go

Billing, signature level and extras

Three ways to pay Docusign

Docusign sells Standard at $25 per user a month billed upfront for the year, $30 a month on an annual commitment paid monthly, or $45 a month on monthly billing, where the allowance becomes 10 envelopes per user per month, per its plans page checked on 26 October 2026. SignWell bills Light at $10 a sender billed annually or $12 monthly, with no contracts and no cancellation fees, per its pricing FAQ.

The level of signature an EU contract needs

eIDAS defines three levels. An electronic signature is data attached to or logically associated with other data and used by the signatory to sign; an advanced one must be uniquely linked to the signatory, capable of identifying them, made with data under their sole control and linked to the signed data so later changes are detectable; a qualified one is an advanced signature made with a qualified creation device and based on a qualified certificate. Article 25 gives only the qualified level the equivalent legal effect of a handwritten signature. All of this is in Articles 3, 25 and 26 of the consolidated Regulation on EUR-Lex, read on 26 October 2026.

Docusign says it is a registered QTSP in Europe, sells advanced signatures with identity verification through its sales team, and offers qualified signatures as an add-on to eSignature plans, with data centres in three EU countries. SignWell's security page says it complies with eIDAS, the ESIGN Act and UETA, and neither that page nor its plan table names an advanced or qualified option. If your lawyer says a contract needs the qualified level, that settles it for that contract.

Extras that are metered

Docusign's add-ons include SMS delivery from $0.36 each and identity verification from $2.40 per attempt, on Standard or Business Pro, per its plans page, checked on 26 October 2026. SignWell's Business plan includes 50 SMS credits a month and one-time passcodes for signers, per its pricing page.

Plan prices on 26 October 2026

SignWell, per month on its pricing page, checked on 26 October 2026: Free for 1 sender and 3 documents; Light $10 billed annually or $12 monthly for one sender, extra senders $10 or $12; Business $30 or $36 for three senders, extra senders $12 or $15; Enterprise priced for teams of 50 or more.

Docusign eSignature, per user a month on its plans page, checked on 26 October 2026, in three billing types: Personal $10, $11 or $15 with 5 envelopes a month; Standard $25, $30 or $45; Business Pro $40, $45 or $65. The first figure is annual billed upfront, the second annual billed monthly, the third monthly.

One AI step, read before you nudge

Docusign publishes an official MCP connector for production accounts in Claude, ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot Studio, Gemini Enterprise, Perplexity and Slackbot, and its MCP overview lists checking envelope status among the tools. Each Friday, ask the assistant which envelopes sent more than five days ago are still waiting for a signature. The contract owner reads the list, decides who gets a reminder and who gets a phone call, and sends the reminders from Docusign. Docusign advises the official connector, not a custom one, for any production account.

Choose SignWell if your job is

  • Getting standard agreements signed in volume by one to a few senders, without counting documents.
  • Moving existing Docusign templates to a cheaper tool, which its plan table supports on every plan.
  • Paying month to month with no contract.

Choose Docusign if your job is

  • Signing EU contracts at the advanced or qualified level through a qualified trust service provider.
  • Collecting payments and running web forms inside the signing flow, which Business Pro lists.
  • Working inside an organisation that already standardised on Docusign, with SSO on enhanced plans.

Free first, then the commitment

SignWell's free plan sends 3 documents a month and the API key comes with it, so a two-week pilot costs nothing. Before you pay Docusign, check the qualified trust service provider of any vendor against the EU's own Trusted List Browser, which is free. Docusign's "Annual | Billed monthly" option reads like a monthly plan and is a 12-month commitment: its FAQ says you may cancel without penalty within 30 days, after which the remaining balance of the year is due, so the monthly-looking price buys Docusign a year of revenue.
