The short answer: if a founder or a social lead posts several captioned shorts a week cut from podcasts and interviews, and nobody needs the full episode edited, Submagic does that one job well: Pro at $39 per member a month on monthly billing takes 40 videos of up to 5 minutes each, with zooms, b-roll, silence removal and publishing (Submagic pricing, checked on 26 October 2026). If the episode itself has to be cut, cleaned and published before any short exists, Descript is the tool, from $24 a month on Hobbyist with 10 media hours, editing by transcript (Descript pricing).

The three numbers that pick the plan:

  1. The longest clip you post. Submagic caps each upload and export at 2 minutes on Starter, 5 on Pro and 30 on Business, with files up to 3,000 MB (length article). For example, a weekly 12-minute YouTube cut needs Business at $69 a month, while 60-second shorts fit Starter at $19 (pricing).
  2. The clips you made last month. Submagic's plans translate credits into videos: 15 a month on Starter, 40 on Pro, up to 100 on Business (pricing). Count last month's posts and the tier follows.
  3. What each clip earns. Views and follows per clip, by platform, for the month before and the month after. Submagic's Pro plan adds analytics for the accounts it publishes to.

A caption studio and an editor

Submagic starts from a short talking-head video and dresses it: animated captions, hook titles, zooms, b-roll, music and cleaned audio, in a set of templates (Submagic). Descript starts from the whole recording, turns it into a document you edit, and then offers captions, clips and translation on top (Descript). The overlap is captions. Everything else points in a different direction.

What decides it

Polish, or structure

Submagic's tools change how a clip looks and sounds: caption styles, zooms, hook titles, bad takes and silences removed on Pro (pricing). Descript's tools change what a recording says: delete a rambling answer, move a sentence, remove retakes, then export (Descript). A 45-minute episode with three strong minutes needs structure first.

The length ceiling

The cap applies to export as well as upload (length article). A team that posts the occasional 8-minute explainer to LinkedIn pays for Business every month to cover it. Descript meters hours instead; the only duration limit in its plan table is on web-link exports, 1 hour on Hobbyist and 3 on Creator (Descript pricing).

Who on the team pays

Both bill per person: Submagic per member, Descript per editor seat, Creator scaling to three and Business to five (Submagic pricing, Descript pricing). Two social editors on Submagic Pro cost 2 x $39 = $78 a month on monthly billing; two on Descript Creator, 2 x $35 = $70.

A Drive folder that edits itself

Submagic's integrations page describes a Google Drive connection: drop raw video into a folder and Submagic edits it with captions, b-roll and more, then sends the finished version back to Drive; Zapier, Make, n8n and Gumloop connections sit beside it (integrations page). Set up one folder per show, with the brand preset applied, and have whoever records drop each cut-down clip there. The human check: the returned file lands in Drive, not on a feed, and a person reads every caption against the audio, names and numbers first, before it moves to the scheduling folder. The same page offers to post for you; leave that off until a month of clips has passed the check without corrections. Descript reaches a similar point through Zapier and its API, which send an Underlord instruction and collect the edited video (integrations).

What the trial lets you keep

Submagic's free trial lets you upload three short videos and edit them as you like, and a watermark-free download needs a subscription (trial article). The trial is built to show you the captions and sell you the clean file. Judge the captions there, and buy one month on monthly billing before the yearly discount.

Free first

Descript's Free plan gives 60 media minutes a month and 720p exports without a card (Descript pricing). Take one recent episode into Descript and cut the strongest two minutes through the transcript. Then put that two-minute cut into the Submagic trial and caption it. If the Descript cut already looks ready to post, you need one tool, not two.

Choose by the job

  • Choose Submagic if your job is a high weekly volume of short captioned clips, under 5 minutes each, posted to TikTok, Reels and Shorts from one place.
  • Choose Descript if your job is editing the full episode or webinar, and the shorts are one output among several.
