The short answer: if most of what your team publishes is people talking, a company podcast, webinars, a founder explaining the roadmap, Descript fits, because you cut the recording by deleting words from its transcript; Hobbyist is $24 a month on monthly billing for one person with 10 media hours (Descript pricing, checked on 26 October 2026). If most of it is fast social video built from templates, effects and trending formats, often finished on a phone, CapCut is the lighter buy, with Pro listed at USD 19.99 a month for 1,200 AI credits, a figure its page calls a reference until you sign in (CapCut pricing).

Disclosure: I may earn a commission through some links on this site. It does not change what this page says.

Before either download:

  1. Price three editors, not one. For example, three people on Descript Creator pay 3 x $35 = $105 a month on monthly billing (Descript pricing); on CapCut Teams the reference price is 3 x USD 12.49 = USD 37.47 a month, with 1,200 AI credits a seat and a brand kit (CapCut pricing).
  2. Sort your last ten videos. Count how many were speech-led and how many were built from visuals and music. Seven speech-led videos out of ten point to Descript; seven template clips point to CapCut.
  3. Time the next two pieces. Minutes of editing per finished minute of video, in the tool you use now, so the trial has something to beat.

Two editors, built for different material

Descript's homepage puts it simply: your words are the edit, and deleting a word deletes that moment of video (Descript). Around that sit Studio Sound, filler-word and retake removal, captions, translation and an agent, Underlord. CapCut is a conventional editor spread across CapCut Desktop, CapCut Online, CapCut Pad and CapCut Mobile, with templates, auto captions, text to speech and generation models around it (CapCut).

What decides it

Speech, or style

A 40-minute customer interview has to lose 30 minutes before anyone posts it. In Descript that is reading and deleting; filler words and retakes go in a pass, and Studio Sound and Remove Filler Words stop at 30 credits per file each run (usage article). A 20-second product teaser with music, motion text and a trending hook has little speech to edit, and CapCut's templates and effects do that work faster.

A phone in the hand

CapCut runs on every device a social lead carries (CapCut), so a clip started on a laptop can be finished on a train. Descript is a desktop and web editor. If the person who posts is rarely at a desk, that settles it.

What the AI bill counts

Descript keeps two meters: media hours for what you upload or record, AI credits for Underlord and the AI tools, and neither rolls over (usage article). CapCut prices generation by the second, with Seedance 2.5 shown from $0.12 a second on Pro in the first month (CapCut pricing). Editing speech in Descript spends media hours; generating footage in CapCut spends credits fast.

Prices, per person

  • Descript: Free; Hobbyist $24 a month billed monthly or $16 billed annually; Creator $35 or $24; Business $65 or $50; Enterprise quoted (Descript pricing).
  • CapCut: Free; Pro USD 19.99 a month; Ultra USD 79 a month with 8,645 AI credits; Teams USD 12.49 a month per seat, all as reference prices pending sign-in (CapCut pricing), read on 26 October 2026.

The weekly clean-up as a saved skill

Underlord is Descript's agent inside a project, and Skills save a set of instructions so you run them from the Underlord chat with a slash instead of retyping the prompt (skills article). Write one skill for the weekly episode: remove retakes and false starts, apply Studio Sound, take out filler words, add captions in the brand style. Run it on each new recording. Every run spends AI credits for Underlord's reasoning and for each tool it applies, and the same prompt can cost different amounts on different runs, so read the Usage tab after the first three (Underlord article). The human check: someone listens to the cut at normal speed before export, because Descript's own article warns that Underlord can overpromise and make wrong assumptions.

The clock on the homepage

On 26 October CapCut's homepage carried a countdown timer to a Black Friday deal on CapCut Desktop, with limited spots (CapCut). A timer is there to move the purchase forward, before the free plan has answered whether the editor suits your material. Run the free test first.

A free test of each

Descript's Free plan gives 60 media minutes a month, 100 AI credits once and 720p exports, no card required (Descript pricing). CapCut's Free plan covers basic editing and free templates (CapCut pricing). Give your last podcast segment to Descript and your last product teaser to CapCut, then swap. Time all four edits against the number from step 3.

Choose by the job

  • Choose Descript if your job is editing speech: podcasts, webinars, interviews and talking-head video, cut by people who think in sentences rather than timelines.
  • Choose CapCut if your job is short social video built from templates and effects, by one or two people who edit wherever they are.

Descript's entry is here; CapCut has no entry, so its own site, capcut.com, is the reference. For CapCut against a shared team timeline, see invideo vs CapCut.

FAQ

Does chatting with Underlord cost credits even without an edit?

Yes. Each message uses a few AI credits, because the agent runs on a model either way (usage article).

Can a Descript rough cut go to Premiere Pro?

Yes. Descript exports the timeline to Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve and audio tools such as Pro Tools, non-destructively (integrations page).

Is CapCut's displayed price final?

No. The pricing page says displayed prices are for reference and that the final price, taxes and offers appear after you sign in (CapCut pricing).
