The short answer: if the long recording never needs editing and the clips are the product, OpusClip is the narrower and cheaper buy: Starter is $15 a month for 150 credits, at 1 credit per minute of source video, and it finds, reframes, captions and posts the clips (OpusClip pricing, credits article, checked on 26 October 2026). If the full episode or webinar has to be cut before anything goes out, buy Descript instead, because it edits the whole recording through its transcript and makes clips inside the same project; Hobbyist is $24 a month on monthly billing for 10 media hours (Descript pricing).

Disclosure: I may earn a commission through some links on this site. It does not change what this page says.

Before you pay for clips:

  1. Turn last month into minutes. For example, three 45-minute webinars are 3 x 45 = 135 credits on OpusClip, inside Starter's 150 (credits article). On Descript the same files are 135 media minutes, under a quarter of Hobbyist's 600, plus AI credits when Underlord or Create Clips run (Descript pricing).
  2. Start where the recordings sit. OpusClip's Starter imports from YouTube, local files, Google Drive, Vimeo, Zoom, Rumble and StreamYard, and Pro adds Riverside, Loom, LinkedIn, Dropbox and more (plans article). Descript imports Zoom, Riverside, Restream and others in one click (integrations page).
  3. Keep the hand-cut baseline. Clips posted per recording and the hours they took, for the last month you did it by hand.

A finder and an editor

OpusClip's homepage says it turns long videos into shorts and publishes them to social platforms; the work is choosing moments, framing them vertically and captioning them (OpusClip). Descript is an editor first: the recording becomes a transcript, deleting words deletes video, and Create Clips finds candidate moments inside that editor (Descript clips). One sells you clips. The other sells you the edit, with clips as one of its outputs.

Where they differ

Who decides what the clip is

OpusClip's models pick the moments and score them, and its editor, from Starter upwards, lets you trim, re-caption and reframe what they chose (pricing). In Descript a person reads the transcript, highlights the answer worth keeping and builds the clip in a full editor, with Underlord suggesting moments if asked (Descript clips). The first is faster. The second keeps the editorial judgement with someone who heard the session.

Getting clips onto the networks

OpusClip Pro schedules to YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, Facebook, X, Pinterest, Threads and Bluesky (plans article). Descript publishes compositions to share links and hosting platforms; posting to social stays with whatever tool you schedule in today (integrations page).

How credits age

OpusClip's monthly credits last 60 days and yearly ones 12 months (credits article). Descript's media hours and AI credits reset at renewal, with nothing rolling over (usage article). A team that records in bursts keeps a month's slack on OpusClip.

Minute for minute

OpusClip on 26 October 2026: Free with 60 credits; Starter $15 a month for 150; Pro $29 a month or $174 a year for 300 a month per pack (OpusClip pricing). Descript: Free; Hobbyist $24 or $16 billed annually, with 10 media hours and 400 AI credits; Creator $35 or $24, with 30 hours and 800 credits (Descript pricing).

For example, 300 minutes of webinars a month fills OpusClip Pro's 300 credits exactly at $29, while the same 300 minutes take half of Descript Hobbyist's 600 media minutes at $24, before AI credits. OpusClip also rounds a 4.5-minute file down to 4 credits (credits article).

Five clips from a chat window

Descript's MCP lets Claude or ChatGPT run edits in your Descript drive after you sign in; its own example request is "Pull five short clips out of this webinar recording" (Descript MCP). Import the webinar from a direct file URL, since YouTube links do not work yet, and ask for five clips under 90 seconds that each answer one question from the audience. The clips land as compositions in a project. The human check: someone opens the project in Descript, plays each clip to the end, and fixes the first and last sentence of each, because a clip cut from a transcript can start mid-thought. The MCP cannot hand over an MP4 on request; publishing gives a share link and a download URL. For the same job on OpusClip's side, built as a workflow with a ranking agent, see the webinar clips use case.

A table that grades its maker

OpusClip's MCP page carries a comparison of video MCP servers in which OpusClip's row is the only one marked Yes for clipping intelligence, sign-in without keys and a free tier (OpusClip MCP). The vendor chose the columns. Run your own test instead: the same recording through both, and count the clips you would post.

The zero-cost trial

OpusClip's Free plan gives 60 credits a month, with a watermark and no editing, and its clips stop being exportable after 3 days (OpusClip pricing). Descript's Free plan gives 60 media minutes a month (Descript pricing). Put one 45-minute webinar into both. Compare OpusClip's picks with the five moments you would have chosen from Descript's transcript, and note which list you trust.

Choose by the job

  • Choose OpusClip if your job is a steady supply of social clips from recordings nobody edits, scheduled from the same tool.
  • Choose Descript if your job is editing the full recording first, an episode, a webinar replay, an interview, and cutting clips from the finished version.

Entries: OpusClip and Descript.

Building it as a workflow

A pipeline that moves each recording from the webinar platform to a clipper, has an agent shortlist and waits for a person's approval is a project of its own, separate from either subscription. The agentic marketing service, which I sell, scopes and builds that kind of workflow.

FAQ

Can OpusClip clips be finished in Premiere Pro?

Yes, on Pro, which exports to Adobe Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve (plans article).

How does OpusClip charge part of a minute?

Files with partial minutes are rounded down, so 4.5 minutes costs 4 credits, and anything under a minute is rounded up to 1 (credits article).

Can Descript's MCP import a YouTube link?

Not yet. Use a direct file URL or an upload (Descript MCP).
