The short answer: you are not misreading Riverside's pricing page: its Pro card says $35 a month on monthly billing, while the FAQ further down says Pro drops from $29 to $24 on annual billing (Riverside pricing, checked on 26 October 2026). Both agree on $24 billed yearly, which is also what Descript Creator costs per person on annual billing (Descript pricing), so price will not decide this. Riverside is the better fit when recording quality, podcast hosting, live streams or webinars are the job. Descript is the better fit when the edit is: cutting long conversations by their transcript, with an agent and a timeline export behind it.

Disclosure: I may earn a commission through some links on this site. It does not change what this page says.

Where the money goes:

  1. The hours a month, against each cap. For example, four 50-minute episodes a month are 4 x 50 = 200 minutes. Descript Creator includes 15 recording hours in Rooms and 30 media hours, and a Room uses minutes for the session's length, not per guest (Descript pricing, usage article). Riverside Pro records without an hour limit and caps downloads of the separate studio-quality tracks at 15 hours a month (Riverside pricing).
  2. Where the show lives today. If Riverside already records and hosts the podcast, Descript imports Riverside recordings in one click and maps Riverside's features to its own (integrations page, switching guide). Moving the host is the expensive part; moving the edit is not.
  3. What else you broadcast. Webinars with registration and a HubSpot sync, or live streams to several platforms, exist only on Riverside's side (Riverside pricing).
  4. The clock to beat. Hours from the end of a recording to the episode and its first clip going live, for your last three episodes.

Riverside ships, Descript edits

Riverside describes itself as one flow: record, edit, repurpose, stream and publish, with up to 4K video and separate tracks recorded locally (Riverside). Its editor works on the transcript too. Descript started as the editor and added recording through Rooms, with Underlord as the agent and exports to desktop editors (Descript). Each now covers the other's ground. The difference is which end is deeper.

Three deciders

One subscription from microphone to feed

Riverside Pro bundles recording, editing, Magic Clips, show notes, hosting with analytics and publishing to YouTube, Spotify and Apple (pricing). For a marketing team running one show, that removes a host bill and a hand-off. Descript publishes to a host you already pay for (integrations).

How far the edit goes

Descript's AI tools sit on a full editor: Remove Retakes, Edit for Clarity, Studio Sound, multicam, avatars, and an agent that can rewrite, clip, caption and translate (Underlord article). When an interview needs restructuring, not trimming, that depth shows.

Credits against caps

Riverside's core AI, Magic Clips, Magic Audio and the AI Co-Creator, uses no credits, and Pro starts with 2,000 credits for translation, b-roll and animated clips (pricing FAQ). Descript charges AI credits for Underlord and every AI tool, 800 a month on Creator, with no rollover (pricing). Riverside limits files leaving; Descript limits AI use.

The episode's asset pack, through Riverside's MCP

Riverside's MCP connects Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor to your projects after one sign-in; the assistant can then search transcripts, edit, cut clips and draft the asset pack for a finished episode, thumbnail, title, show notes, social posts and a newsletter, and it can schedule posts to YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and X (Riverside MCP). Ask for the pack in the brand's voice, with each claim in the show notes tied to a timestamp. The human check: the host reads every draft against the recording, and scheduling stays a separate request that the host makes only after that read. The MCP is listed on the Grow plan (pricing). Descript's MCP does the editing half, from five clips to an SRT export, on the plan you already have (Descript MCP).

The cap on taking files out

Riverside records without an hour limit but caps separate-track downloads at 15 hours a month on Pro, and once the cap is reached new tracks wait for the next cycle or an upgrade (pricing FAQ). Those tracks are what an editor outside Riverside needs. The cap keeps the edit, and the next plan, inside Riverside, so count the tracks you export before you choose Pro.

A fortnight to decide

Riverside's paid plans start with a 14-day free trial (pricing), and Descript has a free plan with 60 media minutes a month and 2 recording hours (Descript pricing). Record one episode in Riverside during the trial, edit it there, then import the same recording into Descript and edit it again. Compare the two finished cuts and the hours each took.

Choose by the job

  • Choose Descript if your job is the edit: interviews and webinars that need restructuring, clips, captions and an export to a desktop editor, with recording as a side benefit.
  • Choose Riverside if your job is the whole chain from studio-quality recording to a hosted show, live stream or webinar, edited enough to publish.

Descript's entry is here; Riverside has no entry, so riverside.com is the reference.

When the chain is the problem

When an episode is recorded in one tool, edited in a second, hosted in a third and clipped in a fourth, and nobody can say which seat each step needs, the question is the stack, not the editor. A fixed one-week review, the Startup Fixer, which I sell, draws that chain on one page before another seat is added.

FAQ

Can Descript import Riverside recordings with separate tracks?

Yes. Download aligned participant tracks from Riverside, import them, and combine them into a sequence so they stay in sync while you edit (switching guide).

Does Riverside's AI Co-Creator use credits?

No. The pricing FAQ lists Magic Clips, Magic Audio and the AI Co-Creator as core features that need no credits (Riverside pricing).

Does Descript's MCP cost extra?

No separate charge; it spends the AI credits of your plan, and automated editing uses them faster than editing by hand (Descript MCP).
