Tidio vs Intercom: A Shop Budget or a Software Help Desk

The short answer: for an online shop with five to ten people on support, Tidio keeps the people cheap: its self-serve plans include up to 10 seats and bill by conversation, from $59 a month for 250, while Intercom bills every teammate who answers, from $29 a seat for new customers on monthly billing, plus $0.99 for each Fin AI Agent outcome (checked on 26 October 2026 on the Tidio pricing page and the Intercom pricing page). Intercom earns its higher bill when the job is supporting a software product: messages inside the app, a help centre, several team inboxes and free Lite seats for the colleagues who only need to watch.

What decides it:
- The seat count, priced. For example, six agents cost 6 x $29 = $174 a month on Intercom Essential at the new-customer rate, or 6 x $99 = $594 on Advanced, before any AI. On Tidio the same six share Growth's 600-conversation tier for $129 (Intercom pricing, Tidio pricing).
- The help desk you already run. Both AI agents can be bought without the vendor's inbox. Tidio sells Lyro alone for Zendesk, Salesforce or another help desk; Intercom sells Fin alone for Salesforce, HubSpot or Freshdesk at $0.99 per outcome with a minimum monthly commitment, given as 50 outcomes (Tidio pricing, Intercom pricing FAQ). If your inbox works, compare the agents, not the suites.
- A definition of solved you will check. Fin bills an outcome; Tidio bills a Lyro conversation. Read 30 closed AI chats a month on whichever you pick and mark the ones you would sign off.

The three differences that matter
Seats priced, or seats thrown in
Intercom's pricing has two parts, seats and usage, and every teammate who talks to customers needs a paid Full seat (Intercom pricing FAQ). Advanced at $99 and Expert at $139 a seat on monthly billing add workflow automation, round robin assignment, SLAs and HIPAA support. Tidio's seat count stops at 10 on self-serve plans, and what moves the bill is conversation volume. A shop with eight part-time agents pays Intercom for eight seats, however few chats each of them takes.
What Intercom counts as an outcome
You are not misreading the FAQ. Intercom promises you never pay when Fin cannot answer or the customer asks for a human, and the same FAQ counts an outcome when Fin completes a Procedure, handoffs included (Intercom pricing FAQ). Both hold: a customer who demands a person costs nothing, while a Procedure you designed to end with a handoff is billed. An outcome is charged at most once per conversation and refunded if the conversation reopens. Tidio's Lyro is charged when it replies in a new thread, and not when it hands over straight away (Lyro limit article).
A store tool or a software help desk
Tidio's plan table is written for shops: Shopify actions, product recommendations on a paid Lyro quota, Flows for proactive messages (Tidio pricing). Intercom's free inclusions are in-app chats, banners and tooltips, and its add-ons are product tours, checklists and surveys, which is the kit of a company whose customers log in (Intercom pricing).
Pricing, month by month
Monthly billing in US dollars, checked on 26 October 2026 on the Tidio and Intercom pricing pages.
- Tidio: Free; Starter $29 for 100 conversations; Growth from $59 for 250 to $349 for 2,000; Plus from $300 a month plus usage. Lyro from $39 for 50 to $700 for 1,000 conversations (Tidio pricing).
- Intercom: Essential $29 per seat for new customers, $39 struck through beside it; Advanced $99; Expert $139. Annual billing lowers these to $19, $85 and $132. Fin $0.99 per outcome; Copilot $29 per teammate; the Pro add-on from $100 per workspace (Intercom pricing).
For example, five agents and 300 AI resolutions a month cost 5 x $29 + 300 x $0.99 = $145 + $297 = $442 on Intercom Essential. On Tidio, if Lyro replies in 400 threads to get those 300 and the team answers 500 more, it is Lyro's 500 package at $350 plus Growth at 600 for $129, $479, and if Lyro replies in only 300 threads, $210 + $129 = $339.
One AI step: a refund quote, not a refund
Intercom's Shopify templates for Fin include Calculate Shopify Refund, a dry run that quotes the refundable amount, shipping and tax included, without moving any money (Shopify compensation templates). Add it under Settings, Integrations, Data connectors and set it live. Fin reads the order, works out what the customer would get back and tells them. The separate Create Shopify Refund action is what pays out; leave it off and have a person issue the refund from the quote, until a month of quotes has matched what your team would have paid. One catch from the same article: Fin's preview mode does not make live data connector calls, so test it in a real conversation against a test order. On Tidio, the nearest step is the Get order status template, which reads an order and changes nothing (Action templates).
Both agents talk to customers, so Article 50 of the EU AI Act wants them introduced as AI; the LiveAgent entry explains the duty.
Choose Tidio if your job is
- Answering shoppers with a small team on a fixed monthly budget.
- Giving up to 10 people a seat without paying for each.
- Starting free and adding an AI agent as a separate meter.
Choose Intercom if your job is
- Supporting customers inside a software product, with in-app messages, a help centre and several team inboxes.
- Paying for AI only when it resolves, with a spending limit you set.
- Putting Fin on top of Salesforce, HubSpot or Freshdesk without changing help desk.
Tidio's plans are in the Tidio entry; Intercom has no entry on this site, and its Fin pricing page covers the agent on its own.
Test before either bill
Intercom's 14-day trial needs no card and includes Fin and the add-ons; Tidio's Free plan has 50 Lyro conversations once (Intercom pricing FAQ, Tidio pricing). Take 50 recent tickets, mark the ones your help articles already answer, and put those questions to both agents. The marked share is the most AI will take off your team, whichever you buy.
Intercom shows the $29 Essential seat as a new-customer price beside a struck-through $39, and nothing on the pricing page says how long the $29 holds: the discount is what gets a team trained on Intercom, and the page leaves the vendor free to charge the struck-through $39 on every seat after that. Budget at $39 a seat until a contract fixes the rate.
FAQ
Does Intercom have a free plan?
No. It has a 14-day trial with no card, after which you need at least one paid Full seat; usage such as Fin outcomes is pay as you go (Intercom pricing FAQ).
Is Intercom cheaper for startups?
Its Early Stage programme offers up to 93% off and a year of Fin free to startups that raised under $10M and have 15 employees or fewer (Intercom pricing).
Can Tidio's Lyro work with Intercom's inbox?
Tidio's pricing page says Lyro can be added to Zendesk, Salesforce "or any other help desk software" without naming Intercom, so confirm it with Tidio before you plan on it (Tidio pricing). Tidio also publishes a migration guide from Intercom for teams moving the other way.
