The short answer: four hundred investors, partners or key accounts is a list you tend by hand, not a funnel, and folk is built for tending: Standard at $24 per member a month billed annually covers LinkedIn capture, enrichment, AI fields and email campaigns, per folk's pricing page. When the contacts arrive through your website and ads and have to be nurtured into a pipeline, HubSpot is built for that flow, and its free CRM holds two users and 1,000 contacts without an end date.

Disclosure: I may earn a commission through some links on this site. It does not change what this page says.

folk organises people into groups you build in minutes and fills them from LinkedIn and your inbox. HubSpot organises them by lifecycle, from first visit to customer, across marketing, sales and service. Ask which describes how your contacts reach you.

Three checks before you choose:

  1. Price the feature you will miss first. For example, two founders on folk Standard pay 2 x $288 = $576 a year; automated sequences need Premium, at 2 x $576 = $1,152 a year, from the yearly totals on folk's pricing page. In HubSpot, sequences sit on Sales Hub Professional: 2 x $90 x 12 + $1,500 onboarding = $3,660 in the first year, per the Sales Hub pricing page.
  2. Start from where the names already are. If your list lives in LinkedIn and a spreadsheet, folk's Chrome extension and CSV import bring it in on day one. If it lives in form fills and newsletter sign-ups, HubSpot's forms are already where it lands.
  3. Decide the reply rate that justifies a second send. Write it down before the first campaign; it is the only fair way to judge either tool after a month.

Relationships against funnels

folk's unit is the group: a list of people or companies with its own fields, views and pipeline. That suits work where every contact is known by name, such as fundraising, partnerships, recruiting or a founder's own sales. HubSpot's unit is the lifecycle: a contact moves from visitor to lead to customer as marketing and sales act on it, with each hub reading the same record. That suits work where most contacts are strangers when they arrive.

The test is simple. If you could name most of your contacts from memory, folk's model fits. If most of them found you, HubSpot's does.

The counters you will watch

folk's plans meter what costs it money. On Standard that is 500 email lookups and 2,000 AI field generations a month, 200 research assistant runs and 2,000 messages per member a month, per the pricing page. A 400-name list enriched once uses 400 of Standard's 500 monthly lookups, which is fine for a launch month and tight if the list doubles. HubSpot's free tools meter users and contacts instead; the paid hubs add marketing contacts and HubSpot Credits.

What it costs, checked on 26 October 2026

folk Standard$24$30
folk Premium$48$60
folk EnterpriseFrom $80From $100
HubSpot free CRM$0, up to 2 users$0
HubSpot Sales Hub Starter, per seat$7 as a new-customer offer, list $20$10

In USD, from folk's pricing page and HubSpot's Sales Hub pricing page, checked on 26 October 2026. folk bills per member of a workspace, prorated when members join or leave, and accepts only credit cards.

An AI column that writes the reason to call

folk's documented AI step works on the list itself. In a group, add a column, switch on Fill with AI in its settings and write a prompt that reads other fields, such as "In one sentence, using {Job title}, {Company} and {Notes}, say why this person would take a meeting about a partner programme". The AI fields guide lets the column fill automatically when a record is added or its inputs change, or on demand for selected rows.

The human check is in the same guide: try a few records by hand first and adjust the prompt, because the AI can only interpret data already in folk. Then read every generated sentence before the group goes into a campaign, and edit cells that miss. A personalised line that is wrong costs more than a generic one.

Free before paid

folk's trial lasts two weeks, includes Premium features and asks for no card, per its pricing FAQ; if you do not upgrade, the account is blocked but the data is not deleted straight away. HubSpot's free CRM has no end date. Put the same 100 relationships into both and run one real outreach round.

HubSpot's free CRM page promises no data migration when you upgrade. That is the shape of the offer: a free account is the first rung of a paid ladder, priced to be climbed. It is still a fine free CRM; know which rung you will need before your data settles there.

Choose folk if

  • Your job is managing a few hundred named relationships: investors, partners, creators or a founder's pipeline.
  • Your contacts live on LinkedIn and in your inbox rather than in form fills.
  • You want enrichment, AI columns and simple campaigns without an admin.

Choose HubSpot if

  • Your job is turning website visitors and sign-ups into a pipeline, with marketing and sales on the same record.
  • You need forms, landing pages and nurture email as the main source of contacts.
  • Two free users and 1,000 contacts cover you for now.

Each has its own entry: folk and HubSpot.
