Rank Math vs Yoast SEO: Where the AI Bill Sits

The short answer: if you run one site and your writers draft in Google Docs, Yoast SEO Premium at $118.80 a year, excluding VAT, includes its AI tools and one Docs seat (Yoast SEO Premium). If you run several sites your company owns, Rank Math PRO covers all of them at €7.99 a month billed annually, excluding VAT, but its AI is a second subscription from €5.99 a month (Rank Math pricing, Rank Math AI pricing). Yoast changes where the AI sits: inside the paid plugin, with no credit balance to watch. Rank Math changes how far one licence reaches. Which limit you hit first decides it, and for most teams that is a question of site count against headcount.
Price it the way you will use it:
- Four company sites, with AI, for a year. Yoast is one licence per site, so 4 x $118.80 = $475.20 before any bulk discount (Yoast SEO Premium). Rank Math PRO plus the AI Starter plan in year one is 12 x €7.99 + 12 x €5.99 = €95.88 + €71.88 = €167.76 (Rank Math pricing, AI pricing).
- One site, three writers outside WordPress. Yoast Premium includes one Google Docs add-on seat and charges $5 a month for each extra, so two more writers add 2 x $5 = $10 a month (Yoast SEO Premium). Rank Math's pricing page lists no Google Docs tool.
- Move what you already have. Rank Math offers one-click import from Yoast (Rank Math on WordPress.org); Yoast's built-in import and export tools bring existing SEO data the other way (Yoast SEO on WordPress.org).
- Check the switch. Before migrating, note the title, description and canonical of ten URLs. Compare them after, and watch Search Console's page indexing report for the next two weeks.

Three differences that decide it
AI in the licence, or AI as its own line
Yoast Premium's AI drafts five titles and descriptions at a time, suggests keyphrase placement, summarises a post and builds starter drafts from a Content Planner. The plugin listing says there is no separate AI subscription and no credit top-up, and every suggestion waits for approval before it saves (Yoast SEO on WordPress.org). Rank Math AI comes in three plans, Starter, Creator and Expert, each with monthly limits on articles, fixes and RankBot assists that reset each month (Rank Math AI pricing). One bundles, the other sells tiers by volume: with Yoast the AI is paid for whether anyone uses it or not, and with Rank Math you pick the tier your writing volume needs.
Content written outside WordPress
Yoast built a Google Docs add-on so writers and freelancers can produce optimised drafts without a WordPress login, with one seat in Premium (Yoast shop). Rank Math's answer to a team is inside WordPress: a role manager that decides what each user can touch. A content team whose writers never open wp-admin will feel that difference every day.
How far an assistant may reach
Yoast's abilities, updated on 29 September 2026, let an assistant read a post's full SEO data and write its canonical, robots flags, cornerstone flag and schema type. The focus keyphrase stays read-only, so it is never generated for you (Yoast release notes). Rank Math's MCP set reaches further into configuration, and its fix tool for failed audit tests can set the post title as the focus keyword on every post that lacks one (Rank Math MCP tools). Yoast, per site per year, excluding VAT: the plugin is free, Premium is $118.80 ($9.90 a month billed annually), WooCommerce SEO $178.80, and AI+ with brand monitoring in AI answers $358.80, per the Yoast shop, checked on 24 October 2026. Refunds apply within 30 days of the first purchase and not to renewals (refund policy).

An assistant fixing what an audit found
The job: an audit flagged product pages marked up with the wrong schema type and a canonical still pointing at a staging domain. With Yoast's abilities exposed through the WordPress MCP Adapter, the assistant reads each affected post's SEO data, proposes the corrected canonical or schema type in the chat, and writes it once a person has approved the batch (Yoast SEO Abilities). Yoast's notes set two conditions. Connect your own LLM subscription first. And read before you write, staying in the same session while you review, because a rollback only works while the assistant still holds the old values in context (release notes).
In July 2025 Yoast folded its Local, Video and News SEO plugins into Premium and moved the price from $99 to $118.80 a year (Yoast pricing update). A bundle is priced for the buyer who uses most of it. If you only needed the core plugin, part of that renewal pays for the other three.
Choose Rank Math if
- Your job is running several company-owned sites from a single licence.
- You want redirects and a 404 monitor without paying.
- You want AI usage limits stated per plan, so you can buy only the tier your writing volume needs.
Choose Yoast SEO if
- Your job is publishing drafts written in Google Docs by people who never log in to WordPress.
- You want AI inside the plan, with nothing to top up.
- Local, video or news content matters, since those plugins now come inside Premium.

Yes. Its setup wizard reads Yoast SEO data in the import step, and the WordPress.org listing advertises one-click import from Yoast (Rank Math on WordPress.org).
