SEO PowerSuite vs Ahrefs: Desktop Licence or Hosted Index

The short answer: once your tracking list runs to a few thousand keywords across several sites, a metered plan charges you for growth and a desktop licence does not. SEO PowerSuite Professional costs $349 a year with no cap on projects, keywords, crawled pages or backlinks (SEO PowerSuite pricing, checked on 24 October 2026). Ahrefs Lite costs $129 a month for 750 tracked keywords and one user, but it runs in a browser, keeps working when your laptop is shut, and sits on its own web-scale link index (Ahrefs pricing). Pick by where the work has to run.

Disclosure: I may earn a commission through some links on this site. It does not change what this page says.

Work it out on paper first:

  1. Cost three years, not one month. SEO PowerSuite Enterprise paid for three years up front is $1,377; three years of Ahrefs Lite on annual billing is 3 x $1,290 = $3,870, using the SEO PowerSuite and Ahrefs pricing pages. The gap pays for a lot of inconvenience, so the question is how much inconvenience there is.
  2. Name the computer that will run the checks. The Rank Tracker manual says the software is desktop and cannot start on its own: leave it running or minimised to the tray and stop the PC from sleeping or hibernating (scheduling manual). An office machine that stays on works. A laptop that goes home does not.
  3. Plug in the data you already own. SEO PowerSuite can merge Search Console, Analytics and Keyword Planner data into its projects, per its homepage. Start there before buying any third-party number.
  4. Check the series after 30 days. Set the ranking history for ten keywords beside the average position in the Search Console performance report. A missing day in the desktop data is a night the computer slept.

Three things that decide it

The machine that does the checking

Everything SEO PowerSuite schedules runs on a computer you own. Projects are files, on your drive or in cloud storage, and only saved projects can be scheduled, per the scheduling manual. The upside is control: your data stays with you and no server meters it. The cost is that a sleeping machine is a missed check, softened by a setting that re-runs missed tasks. Ahrefs needs nothing from your hardware; its weekly rank updates and site audits happen whether anyone is logged in or not.

A meter, or no meter

SEO PowerSuite's homepage sells the absence of a daily credit limit, and from Professional up the pricing page lists unlimited keywords, backlinks and crawled pages (pricing). Ahrefs meters almost everything: 1,000 report credits per user a month on Lite, crawl credits, tracked keywords, rows per report. Its FAQ adds that extra users are charged automatically if not prepaid, and that switching on pay-as-you-go credits means automatic charges past the plan's limits (pricing FAQ). If your usage swings month to month, the unmetered licence is the calmer budget line.

Whose index answers the question

Both sell link data from their own databases: 6.5 trillion backlinks on SEO PowerSuite's pricing page, a crawler Ahrefs calls the world's second most active on its pricing page. The difference is in how you reach it. Ahrefs puts Site Explorer, Content Explorer on Standard, and its link intersect and content gap tools a click apart in one interface, built for questions about other people's sites. SEO PowerSuite splits the job across SEO SpyGlass for backlinks and LinkAssistant for outreach, built around your own projects.

Three years, priced

TermSPS ProfessionalSPS EnterpriseAhrefs Lite, annualAhrefs Lite, monthly
1 year$349$599$1,290$1,548
2 years$558$1,118$2,580$3,096
3 years$717$1,377$3,870$4,644

USD, checked on 24 October 2026. The SEO PowerSuite figures are its published 1-, 2- and 3-year terms (pricing); the Ahrefs columns multiply its published yearly price of $1,290 and monthly price of $129 (pricing). White-label reports and scheduled report delivery start on Enterprise.

SEO PowerSuite's pricing page shows Professional as $29.10 a month beside a struck-through $60, while the invoice is $349 once a year and refunds are not given for partial use. A monthly figure on a yearly bill is written to make the commitment feel small. Decide in the free version, then buy the term.

Both free tiers, on your own site

SEO PowerSuite's free version has no time limit: one project that cannot be saved, 500 crawled URLs, 1,100 backlinks and one competitor, per its pricing page. Ahrefs Free needs no card and covers sites you verify, with 5,000 crawl credits a month per project in Site Audit and up to 1,000 backlinks and keywords visible at once in Site Explorer. Crawl the same site in both on the same day and compare the issue lists. Whichever one you act on is the one you would pay for.

Five link profiles, summarised by an assistant

Ahrefs documents a hosted MCP server for Lite and above, with setup guides for Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot Studio and n8n (MCP documentation). One of the example prompts on its SEO MCP page asks for an overview of the backlink profiles and Domain Rating charts of five websites. The assistant compares their link-building pace and returns a summary. A person then opens the referring domains of the fastest grower in Site Explorer and checks whether those links are editorial or bought before anyone copies the tactic. Each call uses API units from the plan, 200,000 a month on Lite.

Choose SEO PowerSuite if your job is

  • Tracking thousands of keywords across many sites for one yearly fee.
  • Running checks from an office machine or a cloud desktop that stays on.
  • Keeping project data on your own drive.

Choose Ahrefs if your job is

  • Researching competitors' links, pages and traffic from one index.
  • Sharing the same data with colleagues in a browser.
  • Handing research steps to an AI assistant your team already uses.

When the stack is the question

Sometimes neither tool is the problem: three SEO subscriptions with overlapping data, and nobody who owns the report. That calls for a stack review rather than a fourth licence, and a one-week review like the Startup Fixer covers it. The SEO PowerSuite entry explains its four apps in more depth.

FAQ

Does SEO PowerSuite check rankings with the computer off?

No. The manual says the software cannot start on its own, so scheduled tasks need it running and the computer awake; a setting can re-run missed tasks afterwards (scheduling manual).

Is SEO PowerSuite a one-time purchase?

No. It is billed annually, with 2-year and 3-year terms paid up front, and cancelling does not refund the unused time, per the pricing FAQ.

How many people can use one Ahrefs Lite plan?

One user is included and up to two more cost $40 a month each. Standard allows up to five extra users at $60 each, per the Ahrefs pricing page, checked on 24 October 2026.
