AdAlign vs Microsoft Clarity: The Bounce or Its Cause

A paid visitor arrives, scrolls once and leaves. Clarity records it. If that is the recording you keep watching, and your Meta and Google Ads spend is under €75,000 a month, keep Clarity and add AdAlign. Clarity shows the bounce; AdAlign scores the ad against the page and names the mismatch behind it. AdAlign's Growth band starts at €590 a month on an annual contract billed monthly (AdAlign pricing, checked on 27 October 2026). The free audit scores one ad without an account. Microsoft Clarity stays the pick for watching what visitors do on the page, at no cost and with no traffic limits (Clarity pricing).
Disclosure: I earn a commission if you buy AdAlign through a link on this page, and this page recommends it. Every claim about AdAlign links to AdAlign's own pages.
What decides it:
- What the leaving visitors cost. For example, take an ad that spent €840 last week and scores 4.1 against its page. By the formula in the AdAlign homepage FAQ, that is 840 / 7 x 30 = €3,600 a month of spend at risk. AdAlign's ad QA guide, updated 29 September 2026, describes a simpler version: the last 30 days of spend on ads scoring below 5. Either way, the figure is money still going out.
- What Clarity already knows. Link a Google or Microsoft Ads account, and Clarity's advertising dashboard lists campaigns with impressions, CTR, CPC, conversion rate and CPA. Beside them sit Clarity sessions and links to their recordings and heatmaps. It needs a unique
utm_campaignvalue per campaign to match the two (setup, campaign details). - The before and after. Pick the campaign whose sessions show the most excessive scrolling, a signal Clarity's own documentation links to poor content relevance (semantic metrics). Score its top ad in AdAlign and fix the weakest dimension. Then compare the next fortnight's sessions with the last.
A recording shows where. A score says why.
Clarity is built to watch. It has session recordings, click and scroll heatmaps and AI summaries (homepage). It flags rage clicks, dead clicks, quick backs and excessive scrolling (semantic metrics). It filters by UTM source, medium and campaign, entry URL and ad campaign (filters). It tells you, precisely, that people from one campaign land, scroll past the hero and go.
What it cannot tell you is what they expected to see. If you have watched the same recording five times looking for the reason, that is not a gap in your eye. The reason lives in the ad's creative, and Clarity's documentation describes no comparison of the creative with the page. AdAlign starts there. It compares each live ad with its page on visual match, message match, above-the-fold continuity and tone, and lists the gaps it finds in plain terms. A headline that promises "50% off" lands on a page that says "contact for pricing". A red product sits in the ad and the black variant on the page (how it works).
Think of each visit as a traffic light. The recording tells you it went red. The score tells you which promise turned it red, and you want both on the screen when you brief the fix.
What each one documents
| AdAlign | Microsoft Clarity | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | From €590 a month by ad spend band (pricing) | Free, no traffic limits, unlimited sites and team members (Clarity pricing) |
| Reads | Ads, creatives, destination URLs and spend, read-only (how it works) | Visitor behaviour, through a tracking code on each page (Clarity FAQ) |
| Ad data | Per ad, from Meta and Google Ads (how it works) | Per campaign, from linked Google or Microsoft Ads accounts (Clarity docs) |
| Output | Score out of 10, weakest dimension, fixes, spend at risk per page (how it works) | Recordings, heatmaps, frustration signals, campaign metrics (filters) |
| History | Score history per client workspace (agencies) | Up to 30 days from recording (Clarity FAQ) |
| On your site | No tag for scoring; the AdAlign tag only for Variants (how it works) | Consent signal required for visitors in the EEA, UK and Switzerland (Clarity FAQ) |
Privacy, since EU readers ask first
Clarity's FAQ is direct about it. For visitors in the EEA, the UK and Switzerland, you pass a consent signal through its consent API or a supported consent platform. Without consent, sessions fragment and full replays are unavailable (Clarity FAQ). EU customers contract with Microsoft Ireland Operations Limited, and the FAQ states that Microsoft has access to the data.
AdAlign works on a different object. Its documented inputs are the ads and a capture of each landing page, not visitor sessions. Its FAQ says ad content and landing page data are stored, anonymised, to build benchmarks, and that AdAlign is working toward SOC 2 (FAQ). Neither replaces your own consent banner.
Why one of them costs nothing
Clarity is free, with no traffic limits. It is also, by its own pricing page, one of the ways Microsoft gathers the behaviour data it uses to improve the machine learning models behind its products (Clarity pricing). That is a fair trade for many sites. It is also the trade you accept by default when you paste the tag.
AdAlign charges by band instead, set from your average monthly ad spend and fixed for the contract year (pricing). For example, a brand spending €40,000 a month across Meta and Google sits in Growth. That is €590 a month for AdAlign, nothing for Clarity, and a €1,500 pilot first that comes off the first invoices if it continues.
Choose AdAlign if
- Your job is finding which live ads promise something their page does not deliver, and what that is costing per page.
- Clarity has shown you where paid visitors leave and you need the reason in a form a web team can act on.
- You want pages re-checked daily and an email or Slack alert when a score drops, instead of rewatching recordings.
Choose Microsoft Clarity if
- Your job is watching how visitors use a page: where they click, how far they scroll, where they get stuck.
- You need behaviour data across many sites at no cost.
- Your question is about the page alone, such as a broken button, and not about the ad that sent the visitor.
Most paid teams should run both, and the order matters. Clarity to see where the money leaks. AdAlign to say why.
A routine that starts free
Start with what costs nothing. In Clarity, open the advertising dashboard and sort campaigns by sessions. Open the recordings link for the top one and watch five visitors who left from the first screen. Then put that campaign's top ad and its landing page through the AdAlign free audit, or the Meta Ad Analyzer for a Facebook or Instagram ad. If the score lands below 5 and the weakest dimension matches what the recordings show, AdAlign, which pays me a commission, is the next step. The demo scores every live ad in one account on the call, and the pricing page lists the bands that follow the pilot. The AdAlign glossary entry has the full product picture.
FAQ
Can Clarity tell me which ad a visitor came from?
To campaign level, through the advertising dashboard and the campaign filter. Its traffic filters list source, medium and campaign. To tell two ads apart, give each its own campaign value or send a custom tag, which Clarity accepts up to 128 per page (Clarity FAQ).
Does AdAlign record sessions?
Not by its own description. The inputs it documents are the ads, creatives, destination URLs and spend from Meta and Google Ads, plus a capture of each landing page (how it works). For watching visitors, keep Clarity.
Does Clarity score landing pages?
No. It summarises behaviour on them with AI and flags frustration signals. But it does not compare a page with the ad that sent the click, so it has no score for the match.
