AdAlign vs Meta Ad Relevance Diagnostics: Rank or Reason

The short answer: quality ranking, average. Engagement rate ranking, average. Conversion rate ranking, below average. Meta's own guide reads that as an ad that isn't producing conversions, and points you at the call to action or the post-click experience. It does not say which part of the page. AdAlign does. Its free audit scores that ad against its landing page without an account, and a free account allows 5 audits a month with the full breakdown. Keep the diagnostics. They are free, already in Ads Manager, and they answer a different question.

How to read the three rankings before acting on them:
- They are cheap to reach. Meta shows no diagnostics for ads with fewer than 500 impressions (about ad relevance diagnostics). For example, at a CPM of €9, those 500 impressions cost 500 ÷ 1,000 × €9 = €4.50. An ad without a ranking has not been judged yet, not judged well.
- They are already on your screen. The three columns are defaults in the Performance column preset. On a custom preset, open the Ads tab, click Columns, then Customise columns, tick quality ranking, engagement rate ranking and conversion rate ranking, and apply (Meta).
- They cover 35 days. Each ranking is only available for the last 35 days, and not for dynamic creative (quality ranking). Note today's values for the ads you fix, then read the same ads again once a new 35-day window has filled.
Two different questions
| What you want to know | Meta's diagnostics | AdAlign | Sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compared with what | Other ads competing for the same audience; for conversion, those with the same optimisation goal | The ad's own landing page | Meta, AdAlign how it works |
| Built from | Feedback from people who see or hide the ad, low-quality attributes, expected engagement and expected conversion | Visual match, message match, above-the-fold continuity and tone of the ad and page together | Quality ranking, AdAlign how it works |
| Answer looks like | Above average, average, or below average in three bands | A score from 0 to 10, one per dimension, and fixes | Meta ranking pages, AdAlign audit |
| Available | After 500 impressions, last 35 days, not for dynamic creative | From a draft ad and a page URL, before launch | Same pages |
| Names the page problem | No; the guide says "post-click experience" | Names the weakest dimension | How to use diagnostics, AdAlign how it works |
| Part of the auction | No; Meta says the diagnostics are not auction inputs | Not connected to the auction; reads accounts read-only | Meta, AdAlign FAQ |
| Cost | Included in Ads Manager | Free audit; connected plans from €590 a month | AdAlign pricing |
What each one sees
Ranked against strangers, or checked against your own page
Every diagnostic is relative. Average means the 35th to 55th percentile. "Below average, bottom 20%" means at least 80% of ads with the same optimisation goal, competing for the same audience, had a higher expected conversion rate (conversion rate ranking). Meta adds that high-price products such as jewellery should expect lower conversion rate rankings than t-shirts. So a below-average conversion ranking can be the page, the price, the audience or the product category. The ranking alone cannot separate them. It sits beside your ad, so it reads like a verdict on your page. It is a ranking of the crowd.
AdAlign's score compares nothing with other advertisers. It reads one ad and one page and asks whether the second keeps the first one's promise: the product and look, the headline and offer, the promise above the fold, the voice (how it works). On Meta that leans visual. AdAlign's Meta Ad Analyzer covers feed, Stories and Reels ads, and Instagram posts and stories. Its homepage says the default weights shift by placement, with tone raised to 30 to 35% for Reels (AdAlign homepage).
The row that says "post-click experience"
Meta's guide is a table of combinations (how to use ad relevance diagnostics). Two rows matter here. Quality and engagement at average or above with conversion below: the ad isn't producing conversions, so improve the call to action, the post-click experience or the audience. Quality below with engagement at average or above and conversion below: the ad is click-baity, so make it represent the product more clearly. Both rows describe a gap between what the ad promised and what happened after the click. That much the diagnostics get right. Neither row says where the gap is. A diagnostic returns a band, not a reason.
That is where a per-ad check adds something. AdAlign names the dimension that pulled the pair down and lists fixes. On a connected account it rolls every ad on a page up to that page, and ranks pages by spend on ads scoring below 5 (how it works).
When Meta picks the page
Enter a website URL on a single image or video ad in a Sales campaign, and Meta's help page says Optimise website destination is then enabled. Meta, not you, chooses which page each visitor gets, by where it expects a conversion, from the home page to a collection page. The diagnostics go on ranking your ad against other advertisers. They never rank it against the page Meta chose. AdAlign's audit guide makes the same warning: check where clicks really land before you audit the page you set. Which page did your weakest ad send people to yesterday?
From a below-average ranking to a fixed page
- Filter, free. In Ads Manager, show the three columns and list the ads with conversion below average and quality and engagement at average or above. That is Meta's "isn't producing conversions" row, and your queue.
- Find the real destination. For each ad, open Destination and then Personalised destinations, and note whether Optimise website destination is on (Meta). If it is, the page you set is one of several.
- Check the pair by hand. Open the ad preview and the page on a phone: same product, offer, promise above the fold, tone. One line per ad.
- Score the worst one free. Run it through the Meta Ad Analyzer or the free audit, and compare its weakest dimension with your note.
- Connect when the queue is longer than an afternoon. AdAlign syncs Meta read-only, scores every live ad as it goes live, re-checks monitored pages daily and sends low-score alerts to email or Slack (how it works). A person still decides each fix. Page variants, in beta, publish nothing until someone does.
Choose AdAlign if your job is
- Finding out which part of the landing page breaks an ad's promise, ad by ad, on Meta and Google.
- Scoring a draft before it has 500 impressions, and watching pages that change under live ads.
Choose Meta's diagnostics if your job is
- Telling whether an underperforming ad has a creative quality problem, an interest problem or a conversion problem, against the auction you are in.
- Spotting engagement bait, withheld information and sensationalised language, which Meta's quality ranking assesses.
Use the diagnostics to decide that the post-click experience is the problem, and AdAlign to find out what in it. The connected setup is described in how to use AdAlign and the AdAlign entry.
Put a reason next to the ranking
Run the ad with the worst conversion rate ranking and average quality and engagement through AdAlign's free audit today. If the page scores below 5, you have a reason Meta's column could not give you. For every live Meta and Google ad at once, AdAlign, which pays me a commission, starts with a 30-day pilot at €1,500. It is credited to the first invoices, and refunded if it surfaces fewer than 3 issues your team agrees are real. Growth runs from €590 a month on an annual contract for up to €75k of monthly spend, excluding VAT (pricing, checked on 27 October 2026). Book the walkthrough on the demo page.
FAQ
Will a better-matched page raise my quality ranking?
Do not buy anything for that alone. Meta builds quality from the feedback of people who see or hide the ad, and from low-quality attributes. Its ad quality page asks you to keep those out of post-click experiences, landing pages included. It does not list ad-to-page match as a signal. AdAlign's Meta Ad Analyzer page says alignment improves Quality Ranking. Meta's pages do not say so, and the rankings themselves are diagnostics, not auction inputs. Fix the page for conversions, and treat any ranking change as a side effect.
Should I chase above-average rankings?
Meta says no. Use the diagnostics on ads that miss their objective, not on ads that already meet it. High-performing ads sometimes rank below average (how to use).
Why does an ad show no rankings?
It has fewer than 500 impressions, uses dynamic creative, or, for engagement and conversion, runs on an optimisation goal Meta excludes, such as reach, impressions or value (engagement rate ranking).
