The short answer: for one coach with 10,000 contacts mailed four times a month, HighLevel's Starter plan costs $97 plus 40 x $0.675 = $27 of email, so $124 a month, while Kartra needs its Growth plan at $229 with email included (HighLevel pricing, HighLevel pricing guide, Kartra plans, monthly billing, checked on 26 October 2026). Choose Kartra if your job is a membership run by one expert, with video hosted in the account, a helpdesk from Growth and no meter on sends. Choose HighLevel if your job is client accounts, or leads who expect a text or a call back within the hour.

Kartra is built around one person selling what they know: pages, funnels, email and SMS, checkouts, membership portals, video hosting and calendars in one account, and its FAQ calls the subscription a flat rate with never any extra fees, though the Essentials card lists a 5% transaction fee (plans page). HighLevel is built around the sub-account, one per client, each with its own CRM, funnels, calendars, conversations and payments, and every plan carries unlimited contacts and users; telephony, email and premium AI are billed by use on top (HighLevel pricing). One prices the audience. The other prices the activity.
Four inputs, then the decision:
- Your list and how often you mail it. For example, 2,500 contacts mailed four times a month is 10,000 emails: HighLevel Starter costs $97 + 10 x $0.675 = $103.75, Kartra Starter $119 with unlimited email (HighLevel pricing guide, Kartra plans). The meter wins small and loses as sends grow.
- The texts you send. Kartra delivers SMS through your own Twilio, Plivo or Nexmo account, which bills you directly (Twilio guide, integrations). HighLevel's phone system charges the same rates as Twilio from your wallet (pricing guide). Either way, texting costs money outside the plan.
- The tools you would switch off. Course host, video host, scheduler, support inbox. Kartra Starter covers video and calendars and Growth adds the helpdesk; HighLevel lists courses, communities, calendars, one inbox and payments as core features. Only a cancelled subscription saves money.
- Revenue per contact. Last quarter's revenue divided by list size, taken before any move. If neither platform raises it, the cheaper bill was the right one.
Seven answers from the vendors' pages
| Question | Kartra | HighLevel |

| Fee on your sales | 5% on Essentials; 0% from Starter | None listed; payment providers' fees apply |
| Members and courses | Unlimited memberships and video hosting from Starter | Courses and communities among core features |
| Answering customers | Helpdesk from Growth, live chat on Professional | Two-way SMS, calling, Conversation AI, one inbox |

Three places they part
The bill follows different things
Kartra's bill follows the list: at the plan's lead limit the account is upgraded to the tier that fits, with a mid-cycle fee, while domains and team members simply stop at the cap (plans page). HighLevel's subscription stops climbing at $297 for unlimited clients, and the wallet takes over, refilled from the card on file whenever it falls below your minimum (pricing guide). Kartra is predictable until the list grows. HighLevel is predictable until people start replying.
One business, or many
Kartra's tiers count team members inside one business, 5 on Starter and 10 on Growth. HighLevel's count client accounts, backed by a snapshot library of pre-built accounts for dentists, gyms and the like (HighLevel pricing). A course creator rarely needs a second sub-account; an agency needs one per client.
What happens after someone replies
HighLevel puts texts, calls, email and social messages in one inbox, with Conversation AI and Voice AI billed by use or on AI Employee plans at $50 or $97 a month per sub-account (pricing). Kartra answers members through a helpdesk from Growth, with live chat on Professional (plans page). Leads who ring want the first. Members with a ticket want the second.
Every plan on one table
| Plan | Billed monthly | Billed yearly | Limit that sets it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kartra Essentials | $59 | $52 a month | 500 contacts, 5% fee on sales |
| Kartra Starter | $119 | $99 a month | 2,500 contacts |
| Kartra Growth | $229 | $189 a month | 12,500 contacts |
| Kartra Professional | $549 | $429 a month | 25,000 contacts |
| HighLevel Starter | $97 | $970 a year | 3 sub-accounts |
| HighLevel Unlimited | $297 | $2,970 a year | Unlimited sub-accounts |
| HighLevel Agency Pro | $497 | $4,970 a year | Adds SaaS Mode and markup on rebilling |
Checked on 26 October 2026 on the Kartra plans page and the HighLevel pricing page, in USD. HighLevel's usage charges for email, phone and AI come on top of its column.
A sales page drafted by HighLevel's AI, signed off by a person
HighLevel's Funnel & Website AI builds pages from guided inputs, a prompt, a URL or an image, free with daily limits per its AI tools article.
- In the sub-account, open Sites, then Funnels, and choose Build with AI.
- Pick Assist and fill in the page name, niche, goal, audience and offer, with the real price and the real guarantee.
- Refine by chat: ask for a FAQ section or a tighter headline without regenerating the page.
- The human check: HighLevel's notes say to verify generated copy, claims, contact details, offers, links and images, and the SEO fields. The offer's owner reads every line against the checkout, then publishes.
Kartra's counterpart is Kartra AI, which helps write pages, emails and sales copy (homepage), metered at 30 uses a month on Essentials and 100 on Starter (plans page).
The paper test, then the trials
Price last quarter's list size, emails and texts on both pages; it costs nothing and settles most cases. Then trial the winner. Kartra gives 14 days on any plan with sending capped at 1,000 emails and a 30-day money-back guarantee (trial page); HighLevel gives 14 days and starts billing when they end unless you cancel (pricing).
Look at how HighLevel's email is switched on. Its pricing guide says LC Email works out of the box for every sub-account, so the first broadcast goes out on the metered service at $0.675 per 1,000 without anyone choosing it, and HighLevel's own page against Kartra sells freedom from lead and subscriber limits without mentioning that each send is billed (pricing guide). Set a minimum wallet balance you can live with before the first campaign.
Choose Kartra if your job is
- A paid membership run by one expert, with the videos hosted in the same account.
- Answering members through a helpdesk rather than a text thread.
- Mailing a mid-sized list often, with email inside the plan price.
Choose HighLevel if your job is
- Building lead capture and booking for several client businesses from one login.
- Calling and texting leads from the same inbox as email.
- A large list mailed rarely, where unlimited contacts and a per-send meter cost less.
The products in depth: the Kartra entry and the HighLevel entry; how to use Kartra sells a membership with a free trial and how to use HighLevel turns form leads into booked calls.
If this comparison began because payments sit in one tool, member questions in another and the course in a third, map that before buying a platform to replace it. The Startup Fixer, which I sell, maps it in a week.
FAQ
Does HighLevel charge for contacts?
No. Every plan includes unlimited contacts and users; usage is what grows, email at $0.675 per 1,000 and phone at Twilio's rates (HighLevel pricing, pricing guide).
Can Kartra run accounts for clients?
Its comparison table ticks an agency capacity row from Growth upwards without describing it, and the plans page lists no white label; the limits are written for one business, by team members, domains and languages (Kartra plans). HighLevel prices by client sub-account, which is the work it is built around.
Does Kartra include SMS?
Starter and above list unlimited email and SMS, but the texts travel through your own Twilio, Plivo or Nexmo account, which charges you for each message (Twilio guide, integrations).
